Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position within the Private Sector Unit of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division involves providing programmatic and administrative support for the planning, coordination, and execution of activities related to private sector partnerships. The role is essential in ensuring that these partnerships align with UNEP's Medium-Term Strategy and Programme of Work. The volunteer will assist in tracking and monitoring the implementation of these partnerships, preparing project documents, and compiling data on UNEP's private sector engagements. This position also requires contributing to the development of communication materials that highlight the impact of UNEP's partnerships and supporting the organization of meetings and events related to private sector engagement. The volunteer will play a vital role in catalyzing shifts in business models and practices that promote sustainability in high-impact sectors, thereby contributing to UNEP's environmental objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include:
Providing programmatic and administrative support for the planning, coordination, and execution of activities under the Private Sector Unit’s portfolio.
Assisting in tracking and monitoring the implementation of private sector partnerships to ensure alignment with UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy and Programme of Work.
Supporting the preparation and review of project documents, concept notes, reports, and correspondence related to private sector partnerships.
Compiling and maintaining data on UNEP’s private sector engagements to support internal and external reporting, including inputs to the Committee of Permanent Representatives updates and annual partnership reports.
Contributing to the development of briefing materials and presentations for senior management, CPR sessions, and inter-agency meetings.
Supporting coordination with internal teams and external partners, including other UNEP divisions, UN entities, business coalitions, and multistakeholder initiatives.
Assisting in the organization of meetings, events, and workshops related to private sector engagement, including logistical coordination and documentation.
Contributing to communication materials that highlight the impact of UNEP’s private sector partnerships.
Helping catalyze shifts in business models and value chains that drive sustainability in high-impact sectors such as energy, electronics, textiles, plastics, and construction. 1
Supporting the development of innovative solutions and practices that contribute to UNEP’s environmental objectives. 1
Performing other duties as required in support of the Unit’s mandate and emerging priorities.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong understanding of environmental issues and the role of the private sector in addressing these challenges. Candidates should possess excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficiency in data management and reporting is essential, as well as the ability to prepare high-quality documents and presentations. Familiarity with UNEP's objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in environmental science, business administration, international relations, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline would be an advantage. Candidates should have a solid academic background that demonstrates their understanding of environmental policies and sustainable development practices.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in program support, project management, or partnership engagement, preferably within an international organization or non-governmental organization. Experience working with the private sector and understanding its role in environmental sustainability is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations would be an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP. Knowledge of other UN languages, such as French or Spanish, would be considered an asset and beneficial for engaging with a broader range of stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role under the United Nations system, and it may involve a commitment of several months. The volunteer will be expected to work full-time and may be required to participate in various events and meetings outside of regular working hours. The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, which is a vibrant city with a diverse cultural background and a significant presence of international organizations. The volunteer will receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses, and additional support may be provided for relocation and accommodation.
