Job Overview: The Programme Forêt in RDC and Cameroon is seeking two academic or professional interns to support its work on community-managed forests in the Congo Basin. The primary mission of the interns will be to assist with legal research and analysis, while also contributing to broader programmatic work. This includes supporting initiatives such as 'Foundations of a New Generation of Community Forestry in the Congo Basin' and 'Community-Led Forest Economies'. Interns will engage in various tasks that enhance their understanding of community forestry and its implications for sustainable development in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for supporting documentary research and legal analyses on community-managed forests in Cameroon and RDC. They will assist in developing an inventory and glossary of types (legal mechanisms and governance models), status, and extent of community-led forest management, including a digital map of their distribution by type for each country (particularly Cameroon and RDC). Additionally, they will help create a glossary of types of community-led forest economies in the Congo Basin, specifically in Cameroon, RDC, Republic of Congo, and Gabon. Interns will also review challenges and success factors related to establishing and implementing community-led forest management, examine reports, regulatory decisions, and policies that favor the development of community economies in the forestry sector, and support the organization of activities during the internship period. The main deliverable expected is a report that includes lessons learned and proposals for innovation in the activities they contributed to.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in public policy or related fields. They should have one or two experiences in legal and policy analysis within the forestry or sustainable development sectors. A good understanding of the forestry sector in the Congo Basin is essential, along with proficiency in MS Office tools, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Educational Background: A Master's degree or equivalent in public policy or related fields is required for this position. This educational background ensures that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to engage with complex issues related to forestry and sustainable development.
Experience: Candidates should have one to two years of experience in legal and policy analysis, particularly in the forestry sector or sustainable development. This experience is crucial for understanding the regulatory frameworks and challenges faced in community-managed forestry initiatives.
Languages: Proficiency in both English and French is required for this position, as the work will involve engaging with stakeholders and literature in both languages. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The internship positions are local, with one intern based in Cameroon and one in RDC. The duration of the internship is three months, from December 1, 2025, to February 27, 2026, at the WRI offices in Kinshasa and Yaoundé. Candidates are required to submit their CV, a brief cover letter (maximum 300 words) specifying the country they are applying for, and a relevant writing sample (e.g., a research article, blog, or policy brief). The deadline for submitting applications is November 10, 2025.
