Job Posting Organization: The internship is offered by the Environment and Development Division, specifically the SustainableUrban Development Section of the United Nations. The Sustainable Urban Development Section focuses on advancing sustainable and inclusive urban development across Asia and the Pacific, working closely with ESCAP member States and key stakeholders. The organization aims to facilitate intergovernmental processes, provide technical assistance, develop knowledge products, and foster partnerships to mobilize resources and innovation.
Job Overview: The internship position is designed for individuals who are interested in gaining practical experience in the field of sustainable urban development. Interns will work full-time for a minimum of four months, preferably six months, under the supervision of a staff member. The role involves supporting the Sustainable Urban Development Section in its mission to enhance sustainable urban practices in the Asia-Pacific region. Interns will engage in various tasks that contribute to the section's objectives, including organizing meetings, conducting research, and assisting with project implementation. This position provides an opportunity to learn about the workings of the United Nations and to contribute to meaningful projects that impact urban development.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may vary based on their background and the specific office they are assigned to. Key duties include:
Supporting the organization and execution of meetings and webinars relevant to the section's work, which involves drafting documents and communication materials, preparing for intergovernmental meetings, and following up on activities (40% of the role).
Assisting with tasks related to the organizational and substantive aspects of program and project implementation, focusing on areas such as urban climate action and SDG localization (30%).
Conducting research and identifying case studies on urban development policies and programs, analyzing their impact on sustainable and resilient development in the Asia-Pacific region (20%).
Participating in daily operational tasks, including responding to information requests, developing presentations, and updating web pages related to the section's work (10%).
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) in fields related to international development, sustainable development, urban planning, environmental management, or similar areas; or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level) in related fields. Additionally, candidates should possess special skills such as proficiency in Microsoft Suite beyond basic applications, video-editing capabilities, and graphic design skills relevant to urban contexts.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a strong educational background in areas pertinent to sustainable urban development. This includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or the final year of an undergraduate program in disciplines such as international development, sustainable development, urban planning, environmental management, or similar fields. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of urban development and the policies that govern it.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, any relevant experience in urban development, project management, or related fields will be beneficial. Interns should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the fast-paced environment of the United Nations, as well as a commitment to the principles of sustainable development.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language. Additionally, familiarity with other languages used in the Asia-Pacific region is considered an asset, enhancing the intern's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
