Job Overview: The Programme Associate will provide technical and organizational support for ESCAP’s Environment and Development Division (EDD) in relation to the water and climate change nexus. This position is crucial as the Asia-Pacific region faces significant challenges regarding sustainable water resources due to factors such as overuse, pollution, and climate change. The Programme Associate will assist in compiling information, conducting research, and providing technical assistance to support EDD’s initiatives aimed at promoting integrated water resource management and enhancing resilience against water-related disasters. The role involves contributing to the development of knowledge products, organizing events and dialogues, and supporting the mobilization of resources for project proposals related to water and climate change.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Programme Associate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
Assisting in the compilation and analysis of data related to water and climate change issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
Supporting the organization and coordination of events, forums, and expert discussions aimed at addressing regional water challenges.
Contributing to the development of knowledge products, such as analytical papers and outreach materials, to disseminate information on water-related climate risks.
Engaging in inter-agency collaboration, including participation in UN-Water and its Expert Groups.
Assisting in the follow-up and review of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water, particularly SDG
Developing concept notes and project proposals to secure funding for initiatives aligned with ESCAP’s mandate.
Providing technical assistance and outreach support to enhance stakeholder engagement and capacity building.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, law, international relations, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of one year of experience in research, event organization, or program support is required. Experience in international organizations, particularly related to water issues, is preferred. Proficiency in word processing software, such as the MS Office suite, is essential for this role.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as environmental sciences, law, or international relations. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of water resource management and climate change issues.
Experience: The position requires at least one year of relevant experience, which can include research, event organization, volunteering, or program support. Experience in an international organization, especially in relation to water issues, is highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.
Languages: The Programme Associate must have an excellent command of written and spoken English, as this is essential for effective communication and documentation in the role. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
