Job Overview: The Education Officer will be a key member of the Basic Education team within the Education Section at UNHCR, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. This role is crucial for ensuring the technical excellence of the Educate a Child Programme across five countries: Chad, Kenya, Mauritania, Pakistan, and Uganda. The Education Officer will be responsible for implementing educational interventions that focus on improving teacher performance, literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional learning (SEL) for refugee children. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including UNHCR divisions, regional education advisors, country offices, and implementing partners, to achieve project objectives and maintain high educational standards. The officer will also contribute to long-term educational goals for refugee children, ensuring that their educational needs are met in a holistic and inclusive manner.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Education Officer will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including:
Designing and delivering normative technical guidance for literacy, numeracy, and SEL interventions based on evidence-based models.
Coordinating the development and adaptation of instructional materials and teacher guides to align with national curricula and meet the needs of refugee learners.
Providing technical guidance for continuous professional development programs for teachers, incorporating evidence-based instructional practices.
Developing and implementing tools to assess instructional quality and building the capacity of national and partner staff to provide formative feedback to teachers.
Coordinating with the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Officer to integrate formative assessment tools to monitor foundational skill acquisition.
Promoting the integration of SEL into daily classroom practices.
Ensuring the alignment of all educational interventions with national standards and advocating for inclusivity in education.
Supporting country teams in establishing peer learning structures and communities of practice to reinforce foundational skills pedagogy.
Engaging in strategic partnerships with governments, NGOs, and community organizations to ensure coordinated education services. 1
Contributing to the overall monitoring and evaluation of the Educate a Child Programme across the five countries.
Required Qualifications: The position requires the following qualifications:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Education Planning, International Education, or a closely related field.
A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s) combined with an additional 6 years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
At least 6 years of relevant experience with a graduate degree or 4 years with a Master’s degree.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with demonstrated experience in providing technical assistance to education programmes for forcibly displaced populations.
Excellent written and spoken English, with strong leadership and coordination skills.
Field experience in education programme management and implementation in humanitarian or development contexts.
Proficiency in project management software and tools, along with a commitment to the principles of the United Nations and UNHCR's mission.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or International Education.
Specialization in pedagogy, teacher education, literacy and numeracy instruction, or educational measurement and assessment is preferred.
Coursework or certification in inclusive education, educational psychology, or social-emotional learning (SEL) is considered an asset.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position includes:
A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience with a graduate degree or 4 years with a Master’s degree.
At least 4 years of progressively responsible functions in education, with a focus on education programming for forcibly displaced populations.
Demonstrated capacity to work independently with minimal supervision and to manage education programmes effectively in diverse contexts.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is excellent written and spoken English. Knowledge of a second UN language is desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

The assignment is anticipated to start as soon as possible. The role is not remote and requires the candidate to be based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
