In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview: The Programme Associate position at UN Women involves providing comprehensive support to the Programme Unit in the development and implementation of effective programs that align with UN Women’s rules and regulations. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including operations, program, and project staff, to resolve complex finance-related issues and facilitate the exchange of information. The Programme Associate will contribute to research, financial management, and program implementation, ensuring that all operational, administrative, and programmatic support is effectively delivered. This position is crucial for the successful execution of thematic programs aimed at promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Senegal, particularly in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union's Agenda 2063.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Programme Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Providing administrative, financial, and logistical support for the formulation and management of thematic programs, including preparing work plans, budgets, and proposals.
Offering technical guidance to Country Offices (CO) and executing agencies on routine delivery and reporting of program activities and finances.
Preparing information for audits and supporting the implementation of audit recommendations.
Reviewing program data for the CO/Regional Office website and compiling data for documents, guidelines, and speeches.
Assisting in financial management by creating projects in the Quantum system, preparing budget revisions, and monitoring budget preparation.
Undertaking logistical arrangements for meetings, workshops, and events, including travel arrangements for the Programme Team.
Supporting resource mobilization efforts by preparing agreements and processing information from donors.
Facilitating knowledge building and sharing by synthesizing lessons learned and organizing training for staff and partners.
Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the office and organization.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a minimum of secondary education, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration considered an asset. Candidates must demonstrate strong administrative and financial management skills, as well as the ability to execute administrative processes and transactions effectively. Proficiency in managing data, documents, and reports is essential, along with strong IT skills. The ideal candidate should also possess good knowledge of program management and the ability to present information clearly and effectively.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed secondary education as a minimum requirement. A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field is preferred and considered an asset for this position.
Experience: The Programme Associate should have at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in administration, finance, or program management/support. Experience in a computer environment using multiple office software packages is required, along with a proven track record of supporting a team. Familiarity with modern web-based ERP systems, particularly Quantum or RMS, is desirable but not mandatory.
Languages: Fluency in French is required for this position, as it is the primary working language in Senegal. A working knowledge of English or a local language is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's ability to perform effectively in the role.
