In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Regional Communication Analyst will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of UN Women’s work in the West and Central African region. Reporting to the Regional Communication Specialist, the analyst will support the development and implementation of communication and advocacy strategies. This position involves managing various digital platforms, including the Regional Office website and social media accounts, to effectively reach diverse audiences such as media, program partners, and civil society organizations. The analyst will also be responsible for liaising with country offices and other units within the regional office to ensure timely communication and support. The role requires collaboration with various teams, including Programme, Operations, and technical teams, as well as external stakeholders such as government officials and donors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Regional Communication Analyst will be responsible for planning and designing communication and outreach strategies, conducting communication needs assessments, and analyzing requirements for communication strategies. The analyst will coordinate the development and dissemination of advocacy materials, manage media relations, and maintain the regional office's online presence. Specific duties include preparing communication instruments, managing relationships with the press, organizing events such as press conferences, and developing partnerships with donors and advocacy groups. The analyst will also monitor and analyze media coverage and draft reports, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into all communication efforts. Additionally, the analyst will support the regional communication team in various tasks to ensure the efficient functioning of the office.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism, or a relevant field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The position requires at least 2 years of professional work experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy at the national or international level. Experience in media relations and the use of social media is essential, along with proficiency in office software packages and web-based management systems. Familiarity with a modern web-based ERP system, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by additional qualifying experience. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively communicate and advocate for gender equality and women's empowerment.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of professional experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy. This experience should ideally be at both national and international levels, providing the candidate with a broad understanding of communication strategies and media relations. Experience in managing social media platforms and familiarity with web-based management systems are also critical for this role, as they will be essential for executing the communication strategies effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the region. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.
