The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) focuses on the economic, social, institutional, governance, and policy aspects of fisheries and aquaculture, emphasizing human well-being, food security, and poverty reduction. The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), established in 1993, is a regional fisheries management organization under FAO, promoting cooperation among its members to ensure sustainable fisheries management and conservation of marine resources.
Job Overview: The Statistical/Research Assistant (IOTC Data Management Assistant) plays a crucial role in supporting the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division by performing a wide range of technical, procedural, and record-keeping duties related to statistical data collection and presentation. This position is essential for ensuring the quality, validity, and consistency of data and information produced within the division. The assistant will work closely with the Fishery Officer (IOTC Data Coordinator) and will be expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment in their work. The assistant will also be responsible for drafting and editing statistical reports, preparing statistical material for meetings, and providing guidance to other staff on statistical methods and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Statistical/Research Assistant include selecting and extracting relevant data for database construction and updates, assisting with specialized research, and regularly updating statistical information on the organization's website. The assistant will draft and edit statistical reports, including tables and graphs, and review data prior to processing for computer storage or analysis. They will assist in producing tabulations for publications and ad hoc reports, customize statistical software for data editing requests, and prepare statistical material for internal and international meetings. Additionally, the assistant will provide guidance to staff on statistical methods, recommend improvements to operating procedures, and perform other duties as required. Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a secondary school education and have a minimum of four years of experience in statistical support work. A working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English is mandatory, and familiarity with basic statistical methods for summarizing and analyzing data is essential. Candidates should also have very good knowledge of standard MS Office applications and office technology equipment. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of Seychelles or possess an existing visa/work permit and reside within commuting distance of the duty station at the time of application.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position is a secondary school education. This foundational education is necessary to ensure that candidates have the basic skills and knowledge needed to perform the duties associated with statistical support work effectively.
