Job Description
Job Posting Organization: UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is an agency established by the UN General Assembly to promote sustainable and resilient urban environments. The organization focuses on urbanization and human settlement issues, aiming to create well-planned cities with adequate housing and access to essential services. UN-Habitat operates globally, supporting various countries in their recovery efforts, particularly in crisis and post-crisis contexts. In Ukraine, the organization is actively involved in assisting local and national governments with recovery planning and policy development, enhancing urban planning capacities, and fostering collaboration with academic and governmental institutions.
Job Overview: The Visualization & Design Volunteers will play a crucial role in the Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) initiative, which connects skilled digital volunteers with UN agencies to develop open-source solutions for resilience and recovery. Specifically, the volunteers will be tasked with creating a GIS-Based Recovery Dashboard for Borodianka hromada in Kyiv Oblast. This dashboard aims to visualize reconstruction and environmental risk data through user-friendly maps and interfaces, thereby supporting transparent recovery planning. The volunteers will ensure that the visual identity of the dashboard aligns with UN-Habitat branding and is accessible to non-technical users, contributing to the overall goal of enhancing urban resilience in Ukraine.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Visualization & Design Volunteers include designing the visual layout and interface elements of the GIS-Based Recovery Dashboard, creating engaging map legends, icons, and infographics that represent reconstruction and environmental data. They will apply UN-Habitat’s and Tech4R’s visual identity guidelines, collaborate with the Dashboard Development and Localization teams to ensure bilingual consistency in Ukrainian and English, and optimize dashboard visuals for both desktop and mobile platforms. Additionally, the volunteers will ensure that all designs promote data clarity, accessibility, and inclusivity, and contribute to the documentation of style guidelines and design templates for future use.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for this volunteer position should possess a strong background in graphic design, user interface design, or a related field. They should have experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or similar tools. Familiarity with GIS software and data visualization techniques is highly desirable. The ideal candidates will also demonstrate creativity, adaptability, and a commitment to the values of accountability and professionalism.
Educational Background: A degree or equivalent qualification in graphic design, visual communication, urban planning, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant certifications or training in design software and data visualization will be given priority.
Experience: While this is a volunteer position and does not require extensive professional experience, candidates should have a portfolio showcasing their design work, particularly in creating user-friendly interfaces and visualizations. Previous experience working on projects related to urban planning, disaster resilience, or humanitarian efforts will be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in both Ukrainian and English is mandatory, as the dashboard will need to cater to both language speakers. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This is an unpaid volunteer assignment, and candidates should be aware that it is not an employment opportunity. Volunteers will receive private insurance coverage for health, dental, life, and dismemberment during the assignment. Additional benefits include international collaboration, mentorship, skills development in real-world UN projects, and a Certificate of Service upon completion. The assignment is part of the Tech4R programme, which mobilizes skilled digital volunteers to create open-source solutions that enhance disaster resilience.
