Job Overview:
The UNV Education Expert position is crucial for enhancing the quality of education in Northeast Syria (NES), an area severely impacted by years of conflict and instability. The expert will work under the supervision of the Education Specialist to develop a contextualized framework aimed at improving teaching quality and promoting inclusive education. This role involves conducting a thorough review of existing curricula, providing technical guidance for curriculum alignment, and facilitating Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops focused on inclusive teaching practices and active learning strategies. The expert will also be responsible for developing a roadmap for formalizing referral mechanisms from non-formal to formal education, ensuring that all children, regardless of their educational background, have access to quality education. The position requires a proactive approach to engage with various stakeholders to co-develop a conceptual framework for inclusive, data-informed education planning, and to support the integration of education facilities and systems in NES as governance issues are resolved. The overall goal is to strengthen institutional capacity and ensure that education delivery is responsive to the unique needs of children and communities in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNV Education Expert will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the development of a contextualized framework for enhancing teaching quality and inclusive education in Northeast Syria.
  • Conducting a detailed review of curricula and providing technical guidance on curriculum alignment to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Facilitating Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops that focus on inclusive teaching practices, active learning strategies, and effective assessment tools.
  • Developing a strategic roadmap and technical guidance for formalizing referral mechanisms from non-formal to formal education systems.
  • Engaging in technical consultations to co-develop a conceptual framework for inclusive, data-informed education planning.
  • Creating strategies to support children studying under different curricula in NES, including mechanisms for referral and integration.
  • Conducting a study on out-of-school children in NES due to curriculum issues to identify gaps and propose solutions.
  • Providing ongoing technical support for the integration of education facilities and systems in NES following formal agreements.
  • Monitoring and supporting the implementation of Non-Formal Education programs by partners in camps and community settings, ensuring that educational needs are met effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the UNV Education Expert position must possess a strong set of qualifications, including:
  • A deep understanding of educational systems, particularly in conflict-affected areas, with a focus on curriculum development and inclusive education practices.
  • Proven experience in conducting curriculum reviews and providing technical guidance for educational alignment.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate for the UNV Education Expert position should have a relevant educational background, typically including:
  • A Master's degree in Education, International Development, or a related field.
  • Specialized training or certifications in curriculum development, inclusive education, or educational leadership would be advantageous.
  • Continuous professional development in areas related to education in emergencies and humanitarian response is highly desirable.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in the education sector, particularly in contexts similar to Northeast Syria. This includes:
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in education, with a focus on curriculum development, teacher training, and inclusive education practices.
  • Experience working in conflict-affected areas or with humanitarian organizations is essential.
  • Proven track record of engaging with government and local education authorities to implement educational programs and reforms.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, given the local context and the need for effective communication with stakeholders. Proficiency in English is also required, as it is essential for reporting and collaboration with international partners. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Damascus, Syria. The UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The role is part of the malicious insurance plan provided for national UN Volunteers. The benefits package includes a Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of USD 919, a Monthly Expertise Differential of USD 367.76, and a Well-being differential of USD 275.8
