Job Overview:
The Programme Intern position is designed for individuals who are eager to gain practical experience in the humanitarian sector, particularly within the context of refugee assistance and protection. The intern will work under the supervision of the Associate Programme Officer, contributing to the Programme Unit's efforts in monitoring and implementing various activities aimed at supporting refugees and asylum-seekers. This role involves engaging with both national and international partners to ensure effective delivery of services and support. The intern will be expected to assist in various administrative and logistical tasks, as well as contribute to the preparation of reports and documentation that are essential for planning and monitoring purposes. This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn about the operational aspects of UNHCR's work and to develop skills in project management, communication, and collaboration in a multicultural environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of duties that include: assisting in the monitoring of programme activities and tracking progress against established plans and indicators; supporting the review and consolidation of reports and project proposals from implementing partners; maintaining and updating programme monitoring tools, databases, and filing systems in accordance with UNHCR standards; preparing internal and external reports, briefing notes, and other documentation for planning and reporting; organizing meetings, workshops, and capacity-building activities, including drafting minutes and follow-up actions; conducting desk research and compiling relevant information for programme design and implementation; providing administrative and logistical support to the Programme Unit; and performing other related duties as required. This comprehensive set of responsibilities will enable the intern to gain hands-on experience in the field of humanitarian assistance and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and asylum-seekers.

Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for this internship, candidates must meet specific qualifications, including being a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate or undergraduate program from an accredited university or higher education institution. Additionally, candidates should have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to UNHCR's work, such as international relations, social sciences, or humanitarian studies. Desirable qualifications include proficiency in computer applications, excellent drafting and communication skills in English, and knowledge of French and/or Arabic, which would be considered an asset. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are also important, along with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field to qualify for the internship. This educational background should ideally be in areas such as international relations, social sciences, or any other discipline that aligns with the work of UNHCR. Additionally, being a recent graduate or a current student from an accredited university or higher education facility is a requirement for this position.

Experience:
The internship is aimed at individuals who may not have extensive professional experience but are eager to learn and contribute to the humanitarian sector. Candidates should ideally have some exposure to relevant fields through academic studies or volunteer work, but formal work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship. The focus is on recent graduates or current students who are looking to gain practical experience and develop their skills in a real-world setting.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, particularly in drafting and communication skills, both oral and written. Knowledge of French and/or Arabic is considered an asset and would enhance the candidate's ability to engage with diverse populations and stakeholders in the region. The ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages is highly valued in the context of humanitarian work, where interactions with refugees and local communities are essential.

Additional Notes:
This internship is a full-time position with working hours from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Sunday to Thursday, totaling 40 hours per week. The duration of the internship is between three to six months, with the possibility of extension for full-time internships up to eight months and for part-time internships up to twelve months. The successful candidate will be required to work in person in Algiers, Algeria, and will not be eligible for remote work. This position does not require a functional clearance and is classified under the least hardship level (A), indicating a supportive working environment.
