Job Overview:
The Migration Health Physician (On call) will play a crucial role in the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) located in Pretoria, South Africa. This position involves ensuring the efficient daily operations of the MHAC, which includes conducting comprehensive migration health assessments that meet the technical requirements of resettlement countries. The physician will be responsible for a variety of health-related tasks, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment and referrals, and pre-departure procedures. The role requires close coordination with the Senior Migration Health Physician and involves maintaining high standards of health assessment practices, ensuring accurate documentation, and supporting the management of health data. The physician will also contribute to quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with global IOM Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Migration Health Physician will be tasked with the following duties:
  • Ensure the efficient daily operations of the MHAC in collaboration with the Senior Migration Health Physician.
  • Conduct migration health assessments, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment, and referrals.
  • Ensure proper identification of refugees and migrants during health assessments and maintain accurate health records.
  • Provide treatment for TB and sexually transmitted infections, and support HIV counseling activities.
  • Oversee and coordinate TB case management and immunization programs in compliance with technical guidelines.
  • Assist in monitoring and educating staff on the delivery of health programs.
  • Contribute to quality improvement systems within the MHAC and support regular quality control activities.
  • Utilize data analysis and reporting systems to monitor performance indicators.
  • Support the implementation of IOM SOPs and develop specific SOPs for the MHAC. 1
  • Ensure proper reporting and management of incidents according to established guidelines. 1
  • Organize the collection and analysis of migration health data. 1
  • Ensure data quality and timely entry into relevant databases. 1
  • Assist with financial aspects of the MHAC and support procurement of medical supplies as needed. 1
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Medicine from an accredited institution and hold a valid license to practice in South Africa. A minimum of four years of professional work experience in a clinical setting is required, with knowledge and skills to perform immigration medical examinations. Candidates should have continuous clinical experience, preferably in a multidisciplinary hospital environment, with the last clinical posting occurring within the last three years. A good understanding of clinical medicine, patient safety, and infection prevention and control is essential. Excellent bedside manner and communication skills are also required to effectively interact with patients and staff.

Educational Background:
The position requires a university degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution. This educational background is essential to ensure that the physician has the necessary medical knowledge and skills to perform health assessments and provide appropriate care to migrants and refugees.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least four years of professional work experience in a clinical setting. Continuous clinical experience is preferred, particularly in a multidisciplinary hospital environment, with the last clinical posting occurring within the last three years. This experience is crucial for ensuring that the physician is well-versed in current medical practices and capable of handling the complexities of migration health assessments.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, knowledge of common local languages spoken in South Africa is considered an asset, as it can enhance communication with diverse migrant populations.

Additional Notes:
This position does not require travel. Any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation and will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and necessary government authorizations. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan for the duration of the consultancy. However, IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses, and consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance.
