Job Overview: The Registration Associate position is a critical role within the UNHCR Registration team, primarily responsible for supporting all activities related to the registration of asylum seekers and refugees. This role involves ensuring that registration processes are effectively utilized to identify specific protection needs, manage operations, and achieve durable solutions for populations of concern. The Registration Associate will work closely with various stakeholders, including government authorities and partners, to provide quality population data essential for the delivery of registration activities. The position requires a proactive approach to managing registration processes, ensuring compliance with UNHCR standards, and maintaining accurate records of all registration cases. The Registration Associate will also be involved in counseling asylum seekers and refugees, responding to their queries regarding registration procedures, and ensuring timely referrals for individuals with specific needs.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Registration Associate include assisting in the implementation of registration strategies and methodologies for populations of concern, supervising the daily activities of the registration team, conducting registration interviews, providing counseling to asylum seekers and refugees, maintaining accurate records and data related to registration cases, identifying persons with specific needs, collaborating with protection staff and partners, drafting correspondence and reports, providing statistics and reports related to registration data, making decisions related to the day-to-day operations of the registration unit, and supporting the identification and management of risks. The Registration Associate is also expected to perform other related duties as required, ensuring that all activities align with UNHCR's core values and regulatory framework.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of three years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or two years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Essential qualifications include good computer skills, particularly in data management, and desirable qualifications include training in basic principles of international protection and experience working with UNHCR proGres software. The position requires strong functional skills in data collection and analysis, data management, program/project management, and registration standard operating procedures design and implementation.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma as a minimum, with a preference for candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant fields such as social sciences, statistics, mathematics, or information technology. Certifications in these areas are considered essential for the role.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in registration or related fields, with a strong emphasis on experience working with populations of concern, particularly in the context of asylum seekers and refugees. Experience in Northeast Nigeria and familiarity with the local context is highly desirable, as is experience in information management and the use of related tools.
Languages: Knowledge of English is mandatory, along with proficiency in the UN working language of the duty station if it is not English. Additionally, knowledge of local languages such as Hausa and Kanuri is highly desirable, as it facilitates communication with the populations served by UNHCR.
Additional Notes: This is a local UNOPS position in Nigeria, and candidates must demonstrate proof of residency and/or work permit at the time of application. The position is classified at the LICA6 level, indicating a mid-level professional role. A written test may be administered as part of the selection process. The position does not require functional clearance and is not remote, as it is based in Maiduguri, Nigeria.
