Job Overview: The Data AnalystIntern/Software Engineer position at UNDP Kenya is a critical role aimed at enhancing the organization's data capabilities as part of its digital transformation strategy. The intern will work closely with the ICT Department, which is responsible for managing the organization's information systems and technology infrastructure. The primary focus of this role is to extract meaningful insights from both internal and external datasets, develop visual dashboards using tools like Power BI, and support data quality assurance and governance efforts. This position is designed to bridge the gap between technical data handling and strategic decision-making, thereby contributing to more informed operations and strategies across the organization. The intern will be expected to engage in various data-related tasks, including data cleaning, transformation, and analysis, while also assisting in the design and maintenance of interactive dashboards and reports.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Head of ICT and in collaboration with the ICT, Finance, Procurement, and HR teams. Key duties include:
Supporting the design, development, and maintenance of interactive dashboards and reports that provide actionable insights.
Assisting in the cleaning, transforming, and analyzing of data to ensure accuracy and relevance.
Contributing to the automation and optimization of reporting processes to enhance efficiency.
Connecting to multiple data sources, including Excel, SQL databases, APIs, and cloud services, to gather necessary data.
Building interactive dashboards and reports using various visualization techniques such as charts, tables, and maps.
Designing user-friendly interfaces that ensure consistent layout, intuitive navigation, and appealing color themes.
Scheduling data refreshes via Power BI Service to keep reports up-to-date.
Providing general administrative and ICT support to the ICT unit as required. Expected outputs include functional Power BI dashboards, well-documented datasets, and regular updates on progress.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for this internship should possess a strong foundation in data analysis and software engineering principles. Required qualifications include familiarity with Power BI, a basic understanding of DAX and Power Query (M language), and proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Additionally, candidates should have a basic understanding of SQL to effectively manage and query databases. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should be currently pursuing or have recently completed a degree in IT, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. This includes those enrolled in a Master’s Programme or higher, as well as those in their final academic year of a first university degree program (such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Recent graduates who meet the educational criteria and can start the internship within one year of graduation are also encouraged to apply. Furthermore, candidates enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program may undertake this internship as part of their program requirements.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have some familiarity with data analysis tools and techniques. Experience with Power BI is essential, along with a basic understanding of DAX and Power Query.
