Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is an agency of the United Nations established to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Job Overview:
The intern will be based in the UN-Habitat Regional Office in Africa (ROAf) located in Nairobi, Kenya. Under the guidance of a Programme Management Officer within the financial and administrative management team, the intern will support various functions related to data collection and analysis for countries in the ROAf. The role involves updating databases for country information, streamlining staff information, and assisting in the development of training materials. The intern will also help establish systems for tracking expenditures and payments, contributing to the overall efficiency of the office's operations. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to the mission of UN-Habitat while gaining valuable experience in a professional setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:
  • Supporting data collection and analysis for countries in the ROAf.
  • Updating the database for country information bi-weekly, focusing on project portfolio and grant data.
  • Streamlining staff information and office reporting data for management purposes.
  • Establishing a database for recording Agreements of Cooperation (AoCs) and payment schedules, including an alert system for pending payments or reporting.
  • Developing a recording system for country expenditure, Financial Agreements (FAs), and Purchase Orders (POs) to track and monitor expenditures effectively.
  • Assisting in the creation of PowerPoint presentations for training materials.
  • Undertaking additional duties as assigned by the Programme Management Officer (PMO) and Programme Management Assistant (PMA).

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). c. Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Additionally, candidates must be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
The preferred educational background for this internship includes an undergraduate or higher degree in fields such as Data Management, Data Analysis, Finance, Accounting, or related subjects. Applicants must be students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. programme, or have completed such programmes. It is important for candidates to provide proof of their educational status as part of the application process.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, they must have a field of study closely related to the internship type they are applying for. Experience in budget, finance, or accounting is required, along with proficiency in data analysis. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency in computer software applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience in designing Excel spreadsheets for continuous input and updates by multiple sources is desirable.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's application.
