Job Overview:
The Special Assistant to the Deputy director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Executive Director (DED) plays a crucial role in supporting the effective delivery of UNEP's Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) and the Programme of Work (Pow). This position is integral to the Executive Office of UNEP, where the incumbent will provide organizational, administrative, and substantive support to the DED. The primary focus of this role includes advising and assisting the DED in daily operations, facilitating the development and evaluation of programs/projects, and ensuring that the UNEP's objectives are met efficiently. The Special Assistant will engage in research, data analysis, and the preparation of various communication products aimed at different audiences, including press releases and reports. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: facilitating the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programs/projects; monitoring and analyzing specific aspects of program/project development; conducting basic research on selected aspects of programs and operations; drafting and compiling information communications products; providing substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions; preparing summaries of articles and drafting correspondence; participating in survey initiatives and assisting with data collection; contributing to the preparation of various written outputs; providing administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences; and performing other duties as required. The role demands a high level of engagement with various stakeholders and the ability to analyze and interpret data to support decision-making processes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of theories, concepts, and approaches relevant to program/project development, implementation, and monitoring. The ability to identify and analyze issues, assist with data collection, and conduct independent research is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage conflicting priorities. A commitment to gender perspectives and ensuring equal participation of women and men in all areas of work is also required. The role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining a high standard of work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences, Business Administration, Management, Law, Economics, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable, indicating a strong foundation in analytical skills and methodologies relevant to the role.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in environmental project/programme management, strategic planning, or policy implementation is required. Candidates should have experience providing substantive support to senior officials, including the preparation of briefing materials and presentations. Proven experience in drafting high-quality technical and policy documents is essential, as is experience in developing and managing international environmental programs, particularly in developing or transition economies. Experience within the United Nations system or a similar international organization is desirable, as is experience in data analytics or related areas.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and both are required for this position. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both languages. Spanish is considered a desirable language, adding value to the candidate's profile and enhancing communication capabilities within a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
This position is for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding. The appointment will be granted as a fixed-term appointment limited in accordance with UN administrative instructions.
