Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental Specialist will play a critical role in leading the environmental and social (E&S) team in the South Asia region. This position involves providing strategic guidance on environmental risk management, ensuring compliance with IFC’s Performance Standards, and promoting sustainable practices in project design and implementation. The specialist will be responsible for supporting investment and advisory teams in managing E&S risks, facilitating knowledge sharing, and leading initiatives that enhance the environmental sustainability of projects. The role requires a proactive approach to monitoring E&S performance across a diverse portfolio, engaging with stakeholders, and contributing to strategic decision-making processes. The specialist will also represent IFC in external forums and contribute to policy development in the field of environmental sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Environmental Specialist will have a wide range of responsibilities, including:
  • Providing technical advice on complex environmental and social risks associated with new investments and advisory engagements.
  • Leading E&S project teams for large and complex projects, ensuring effective risk management and sound solutions for clients.
  • Monitoring the environmental and social performance of high-risk portfolio projects and clients, and proactively addressing stakeholder grievances.
  • Analyzing E&S risk trends within IFC’s portfolio and contributing to portfolio management reviews.
  • Supporting the Regional E&S Manager in operational coordination and acting as a delegated official when necessary.
  • Mentoring and coaching staff to ensure high-quality work and performance assessments.
  • Participating in strategic decision-making regarding IFC’s advisory role and enhancing E&S risk management performance.
  • Contributing to the corporate knowledge base by analyzing lessons learned from projects and preparing policy interpretation notes.
  • Representing IFC at external technical forums and developing position papers in areas of expertise.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in environmental sciences, social science, engineering, or related disciplines. A minimum of fifteen years of relevant professional experience is required, including private sector experience in sustainability and E&S risk management. Experience in leading E&S due diligence and monitoring for projects financed by development financial institutions is highly advantageous. International experience, particularly in the South Asia region, is preferred. Candidates should have in-depth experience in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, with additional experience in other sectors being beneficial. Strong communication skills in spoken and written English are essential, and proficiency in any regional languages is advantageous.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree, such as a Master's or PhD, in fields related to environmental sciences, social sciences, engineering, or other relevant disciplines. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental and social risk management in the context of development finance.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of fifteen years of relevant professional experience. This experience should include a strong background in sustainability and environmental and social risk management, particularly within the private sector. Candidates with experience in leading E&S due diligence and monitoring for projects financed by development financial institutions will have a competitive advantage. International experience, especially in the South Asia region, is preferred, along with a deep understanding of the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as effective communication is essential for this role. Additionally, knowledge of any regional languages is considered a valuable asset, enhancing the ability to engage with local stakeholders and communities.
