The consultant will revisit a subsample of dairy retail outlets to evaluate the safety and quality of milk sold in the market. The primary objectives include assessing the composition and microbial quality of both pasteurized and non-pasteurized milk, evaluating safety risks, and analyzing how these factors relate to marketing channels and pricing. The consultant will be responsible for collecting milk samples, administering questionnaires, conducting laboratory analyses, and leading data analysis and reporting efforts. This role is crucial for generating updated evidence on milk safety and quality, which will inform stakeholders and contribute to improved food safety conditions in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Milk Sample and Data Collection: Collect approximately 50 samples each of pasteurized and non-pasteurized milk from various retail outlets, ensuring staggered purchases to capture different batches. Administer a short questionnaire during sample collection to gather relevant information regarding refrigeration, storage, transportation, and pricing.
Laboratory Analysis: Conduct thorough laboratory testing of collected milk samples to assess composition (fat, protein, ash, total solids, solids-not-fat) and microbial quality (aerobic plate counts, coliforms, Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella, E. coli). Ensure strict adherence to sampling and testing protocols throughout the process.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Lead the analysis and interpretation of the collected data, drafting a comprehensive report that details findings on milk composition, microbial quality, and food safety risks. Collaborate with the IFPRI and ICARDA teams to examine the relationship between safety and quality outcomes, retail channels, pricing, and market types (formal vs. informal).
Required Qualifications:
Proven experience in conducting similar assessments or research projects related to food safety and quality.
Demonstrated financial capacity, including the ability to manage and report expenditures effectively.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to complete the assignment within the specified timeline.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
Familiarity with laboratory testing protocols and data analysis techniques related to food safety.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in food science, microbiology, public health, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees (Master's or PhD) are preferred, particularly for candidates with extensive experience in food safety assessments or research.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in conducting food safety assessments, research, or related projects. Experience working in the dairy sector or with milk safety assessments is highly desirable. Proven track record of managing similar projects within specified timelines is essential.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as all application documents and reporting will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Ethiopia is considered an asset but not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The assignment is expected to be completed within three months, from preparation to final reporting. This is a consultancy position, and the consultant will be responsible for covering all expenses related to sample collection and laboratory analysis. The role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and requires the consultant to be available for the duration of the assignment.
