Job Overview:
The Communication Officer (RCO) will be an integral part of the coordination-team" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">coordination team based in Damascus, reporting directly to the Grant and Partnership Coordinator. This role involves close collaboration with Grant Managers, program and support departments, and field teams across Syria. The primary objective of the RCO is to enhance the visibility of the Syria Mission and support effective grants reporting. The officer will be responsible for developing communication materials and visibility reports for ongoing grants, ensuring that the mission's achievements are communicated effectively to communities, donors, and the public. The RCO will also play a key role in implementing the mission's communication strategy, ensuring that all communication efforts align with the mission's objectives and donor requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communication Officer will have several key responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the implementation of the Syria Mission's communication and visibility strategy.
  • Developing engaging communication materials such as factsheets, brochures, presentations, case studies, human-interest stories, infographics, photos, videos, and social media content in collaboration with program teams.
  • Ensuring that visibility requirements set by institutional donors are respected and integrated into all projects.
  • Working with field teams to collect success stories, beneficiary quotes, and quality visual material to showcase program impact.
  • Contributing to donor reporting by providing communication-oriented inputs, including stories, visuals, and case studies that highlight program impact.
  • Assisting in drafting external-facing sections of reports to ensure clarity and compelling presentation.
  • Liaising with field teams and technical coordinators to align communication materials with project activities and mission priorities.
  • Providing guidance and training to field and program staff on capturing quality photos, quotes, and stories while adhering to ethical standards.
  • Promoting adherence to communication guidelines and donor visibility standards across the mission. 1
  • Establishing workflows for managing and tracking communication content and visibility outputs across the mission.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, Humanitarian Action, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have 3 to 4 years of experience in the humanitarian or development sector, ideally linked to project implementation, as well as 3 to 4 years of experience in a similar communications or media-related role. Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills are essential, along with the ability to tailor content for diverse audiences. Experience in producing various communication materials, knowledge of donor visibility requirements, and familiarity with grants and donor reporting are advantageous. Proficiency in developing compliant visibility materials in line with donor branding guidelines is also required.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a university degree in a relevant field such as Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, or Humanitarian Action. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of communication within the humanitarian sector and for effectively engaging with various stakeholders.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have 3 to 4 years of relevant experience in the humanitarian or development sector, particularly in roles linked to project implementation. Additionally, candidates should have similar experience in communications or media-related roles, which will equip them with the necessary skills to develop effective communication strategies and materials.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. Proficiency in Arabic is considered a strong asset, given the operational context in Syria. Knowledge of French is also seen as an additional asset that could enhance communication with a broader audience.

Additional Notes:
This position is a short-term contract with a duration of 6 months, starting on November 1, 2025, with the possibility of extension. The role is based in Damascus, Syria, and is classified as an employee status. The compensation package varies depending on the candidate's status as either an expatriate or national staff. Expatriates can expect a gross monthly salary starting from €1,925, along with a monthly per diem of USD 750, accommodation, travel coverage, and a comprehensive insurance package. National staff will receive a gross monthly salary of USD 1,620, along with additional allowances.
