Job Overview:
The Programme Assistant – Research and Policy position is designed to support the effective implementation of the Business Environment component under the CATALYZE Malawi initiative. This role is embedded within the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) and is crucial for providing research support, stakeholder engagement, and coordination within the private sector. The Programme Assistant will conduct policy-relevant research, perform data analysis, and generate insights to inform policy briefs and stakeholder engagements. The position also involves logistical and content support for various initiatives led by MCCCI, including Public-Private Dialogue Forums and Business Leadership Summits. The Programme Assistant will report directly to the CEO of MCCCI and work closely with the Programme Coordinator for Inclusive and Green Business, ensuring adherence to UN financial and project management regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Programme Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: conducting desk research and data collection on trade policy and macroeconomic trends; drafting policy briefs and analytical papers; monitoring regulatory developments; translating complex data into actionable recommendations; engaging with MCCCI members to identify policy challenges; maintaining a database of members; supporting stakeholder dialogue; preparing advocacy materials; organizing events; and documenting meeting proceedings. The role requires a proactive approach to managing multiple priorities and ensuring timely execution of tasks.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. A proactive and results-oriented mindset is essential, along with a demonstrated understanding of operations relevant to UNDP. Integrity and professionalism are critical, as is the ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and establish partnerships in a diverse environment.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, typically including a degree in economics, public policy, international relations, or a related field. Advanced degrees may be preferred but are not mandatory. Candidates should have a solid understanding of economic principles and policy analysis.

Experience:
Candidates should have experience in research, policy analysis, or a related field, ideally within a development or governmental context. Familiarity with the private sector and stakeholder engagement processes is highly desirable. Experience in organizing events and facilitating discussions among diverse stakeholders will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNDP and MCCCI. Knowledge of local languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local stakeholders and members.

Additional Notes:
This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment, meaning the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The role is expected to be full-time, with a focus on supporting the MCCCI's initiatives and contributing to the overall goals of the CATALYZE Malawi programme. The Programme Assistant will be expected to produce at least one policy brief or analytical report quarterly and facilitate regular stakeholder meetings.
