The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is a UN organization dedicated to supporting human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism and mobilization of volunteers. The UNV Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) oversees and provides strategic guidance to UNV Field Units, ensuring the effective placement of UN Volunteers across various UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes that address peace, development, and humanitarian needs. ROAS also works to strategically position UNV within the region, facilitating closer collaboration with partners from governments, UN entities, civil society, and the private sector.

Job Overview:
The UNV programme in Iraq is focused on expanding meaningful volunteering opportunities that align with the country's peace, development, and humanitarian priorities. The objective is to enhance collaboration with UN agencies by gaining a deeper understanding of their thematic focus areas, strategic priorities, and potential avenues for volunteer engagement. By participating in this assignment, Online Volunteers will play a vital role in identifying specific opportunities where volunteers can contribute to the work of UN agencies in Iraq, thereby creating new pathways for impactful volunteer assignments. This role offers a unique chance to develop research and analytical skills while acquiring valuable insights into UN operations within the Iraqi context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Online Volunteers will be assigned to focus on one specific UN agency operating in Iraq. Their responsibilities will include: conducting thorough research on the thematic areas, strategic priorities, and ongoing programmes of the assigned agency in Iraq; identifying potential areas where UNV’s onsite and online volunteer modalities can add value; mapping out potential entry points for collaboration that align with UNV’s range of services. Each volunteer is expected to deliver a weekly report detailing opportunities and recommendations for initiating engagement with the agency, ensuring that their findings contribute to the overall mission of enhancing volunteer involvement in UN operations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize information effectively. They should demonstrate a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for volunteer engagement and possess a good understanding of the UN system and its operations. Familiarity with the socio-political context of Iraq and the specific challenges faced by UN agencies in the region will be advantageous. Additionally, volunteers should be comfortable working independently and managing their time effectively to meet reporting deadlines.

Educational Background:
A background in social sciences, international relations, development studies, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should ideally be pursuing or have completed a degree at the undergraduate or graduate level, which provides them with the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding of the UN's mission and objectives.

Experience:
While prior experience in volunteer work or with UN agencies is not mandatory, any relevant experience in research, project management, or community engagement will be considered an asset. Volunteers should be adaptable and willing to learn about the UN's operations and the specific context of Iraq.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all reports and communications will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, as it will facilitate better engagement with local stakeholders and enhance the volunteer's ability to understand the context in which they are working.

This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation.
