Job Overview:
The Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - IYCF will play a crucial role in addressing the growing humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria, particularly focusing on providing quality Infant & Young Child Feeding in emergency (IYCF-E) services. This position requires collaboration with other team members to ensure optimal infant and young child feeding practices are implemented at both community and facility levels. The incumbent will report to the Technical Officer Health and Nutrition and will be responsible for engaging with community members, conducting training, and facilitating support group activities to enhance the nutritional well-being of children and mothers in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Technical Officer will lead and coordinate community IYCF support group activities, identify training needs, and build the technical capacity of IYCF Assistants and community nutrition mobilizers. They will direct skilled IYCF support services, including Growth Promotion and Monitoring at designated IYCF corners. The role involves organizing food demonstration sessions, leading micronutrient supplementation efforts, and conducting focus group discussions to assess barriers to optimal IYCF uptake. The incumbent will also support the development of IYCF multimedia messages, ensure gender mainstreaming in nutrition, and collaborate with community leaders to raise awareness during IYCF celebration days. Additionally, they will engage in community dialogue, take inventory of nutrition supplies, and support monitoring and evaluation activities as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Nursing, or a closely related field, with at least 1-3 years of relevant experience. Alternatively, candidates with an MBBS degree and 1-3 years of experience are also encouraged to apply. Experience working with a humanitarian organization and extensive knowledge of IYCF in a humanitarian context are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality and have proven experience working with IDPs, refugees, and host communities. Familiarity with Nigerian law enforcement systems and NGOs is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Nursing, or a closely related field. Candidates with an MBBS degree are also eligible if they meet the experience requirements. The educational qualifications should provide a solid foundation in nutrition, public health principles, and community health practices relevant to the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have 1-3 years of experience in a relevant field, particularly in humanitarian settings. Experience working with vulnerable populations, such as IDPs and refugees, is crucial. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to engage with communities and implement nutrition programs effectively.

Languages:
Excellent spoken and written skills in English are mandatory. Proficiency in local dialects is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with community members and enhance the effectiveness of the IYCF programs.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Mafa, Borno State, Nigeria, and may require the incumbent to stay at the Local Government Area (LGA). The role demands flexibility and adaptability to challenging working conditions, including long-distance travel to implementation sites.
