Job Overview: The Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM position is crucial in addressing the urgent humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria, particularly in Borno State. The role involves the clinical management and nutrition rehabilitation of children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications at the Stabilization Centre. The officer will be responsible for implementing therapeutic feeding protocols, administering medications, and providing health and nutrition counseling to caregivers. Additionally, the position requires capacity building of CMAM-SC assistants to ensure effective service delivery. The officer will work closely with the Project Coordinator and other team members to ensure that the nutritional needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are met, contributing to the overall mission of FHI 360 in providing life-saving interventions in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Technical Officer include: conducting comprehensive health checks and clinical diagnosis of SAM cases, administering therapeutic feeds and medications, monitoring vital signs and clinical progress of admitted children, ensuring proper documentation, leading daily ward rounds, supervising CMAM-SC assistants, managing a duty roster for inpatient care, ensuring safe preparation of therapeutic milk and food, coordinating referrals and discharge processes, conducting inventory of nutrition and medical supplies, compiling and analyzing data on patient outcomes, supporting monitoring and evaluation activities, training and mentoring CMAM-SC assistants, and providing health education to caregivers. The officer will also be expected to report professional challenges and ensure continuous quality improvement in service delivery.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a B.Sc in Nursing with 1-3 years of relevant experience or an MBBS with at least 1 year of experience. Previous experience working with a humanitarian organization is desirable. The role requires strong clinical skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in challenging working conditions, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Medical Degree (MBBS). Candidates should have a solid understanding of clinical practices related to nutrition and health, particularly in the context of humanitarian emergencies. Additional training or certifications in nutrition or public health would be advantageous.
Experience: The position requires 1-3 years of experience in a clinical setting, particularly in managing malnutrition cases. Experience working in humanitarian contexts or with organizations focused on health and nutrition is highly valued. Candidates should be familiar with national and WHO protocols for managing SAM and have a proven track record of effective patient care and documentation.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Proficiency in local languages is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with caregivers and community members. Strong communication skills are essential for providing health education and counseling.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Mafa, Borno State, Nigeria, and may require the officer to stay at the Local Government Area (LGA). The role is full-time and involves working in challenging conditions typical of humanitarian settings.
