Job Overview: The consultant will be tasked with developing a spatial analysis and land use management plan for Nakuru City, Nakuru County, Kenya. This position involves conducting a detailed analysis of land use and land cover (LULC) changes, assessing their impacts on security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security and environmental sustainability. The consultant will utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools to monitor land use dynamics, identify areas prone to degradation, and propose strategies for sustainable land management. The role is critical in addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, and food insecurity in the region. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure that the findings inform policy and planning decisions that promote sustainable agriculture and land use practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will engage in several key activities to fulfill the assignment's objectives. These include: 1) Conducting spatial data collection and literature review to gather satellite imagery and relevant spatial datasets, as well as existing land use and zoning plans. 2) Performing GIS mapping and spatial analysis to document current land use, including agricultural land and urban growth. 3) Conducting thematic analysis to evaluate the main drivers of land use changes and their implications for environmental sustainability and food security. 4) Identifying challenges and barriers to sustainable agriculture and land use planning. 5) Preparing a presentation for stakeholder validation workshops. The consultant will also be responsible for producing various reports, including an inception report, progress report, draft report, and final report, detailing the findings and recommendations of the study.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a master's degree or higher in GIS and remote sensing. Previous experience in land use planning, strategy development, and natural resource management is essential. The consultant should have proven experience in environmental planning and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including public and private sectors. Strong analytical skills, both qualitative and quantitative, are required, along with the ability to synthesize large amounts of data into actionable outputs. An in-depth understanding of the Kenyan agricultural sector and land use practices is crucial, as well as excellent English writing and oral communication skills. The consultant should demonstrate strong leadership qualities and good work ethics.
Educational Background: A master's degree or above in GIS and remote sensing is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary technical skills and knowledge to effectively analyze spatial data and contribute to land use management strategies.
Experience: The consultant should have substantial experience in land use planning, environmental policy development, and natural resource management. Previous work with diverse stakeholders and proven expertise in environmental planning are critical for success in this role. The consultant should also have experience in conducting spatial analyses and utilizing GIS tools effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as the consultant will be required to communicate findings and recommendations clearly in both written and oral formats. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the local context may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This consultancy assignment is expected to last for a duration of three months, including the commencement and submission of the final report. The consultant will be required to submit an Expression of Interest that includes a brief document outlining their approach, an indicative work plan and budget proposal, and CV(s). All documents should be compiled into a single PDF file and submitted by the deadline of 5th September 2025.
