Job Overview: The Assistive Technology Specialist position is part of the Rehabilitation Technical Division, which consists of 13 staff members responsible for providing technical support and frameworks to HI programs globally. This role is designed to enhance technical expertise in Assistive Technology (AT) and improve operational standards through research and innovation. The specialist will not be involved in regular operational support but will focus on developing frameworks, monitoring WHO standards, and managing a global toolbox for program benefits. The position also includes opportunities for developing new AT-oriented projects and enhancing HI's reputation in the AT sector.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Contribute to the framework and standards for technical know-how in Assistive Technology (AT), improving technical knowledge through lessons learned, research, and innovation projects.
Monitor WHO standards and translate recommendations into operational actions, including priority AT products and supply chain strategies.
Manage the global toolbox for program benefits and explore new technologies to meet AT needs, particularly 3D printing.
Contribute to the development of major opportunities or new AT-oriented projects, including monitoring sectoral AT analyses and data analysis for strategic recommendations.
Enhance HI’s international reputation and influence in AT activities by monitoring stakeholders and donor networks.
Contribute to the Community of Practice focused on cognitive and sensory communication AT.
Participate in emergency preparedness and response as needed.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should be an occupational therapist, orthotist/prosthetist, or another qualified AT professional with a focus on mobility. A Master’s degree is preferred. The candidate must be a specialized and experienced rehabilitation professional in mobility-focused AT, with a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in rehabilitation, including clinical experience in both high-income and low-/middle-income countries (LMICs). At least 3 years of relevant field experience in LMICs is required, along with experience in emergency and Nexus contexts. Knowledge of international standards and current networks is essential, as well as demonstrated experience or interest in using new technologies in professional practice.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as occupational therapy, orthotics/prosthetics, or a related discipline that focuses on assistive technology and rehabilitation.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in rehabilitation, with at least 3 years of field experience in low-/middle-income countries. Experience in emergency contexts and familiarity with international standards and networks is also necessary.
