Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the EBRD's Environmental and Social Policy commitments. This position involves working closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Sector, and Directors within the Environment and Sustainability Division (ESD). The Principal will be responsible for the environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's diverse portfolio of projects, which may include complex and high-risk initiatives. The role requires a deep understanding of environmental and social issues, as well as the ability to provide specialist input to various projects and sectors. The Principal will also engage with banking teams to ensure compliance with applicable policies and to enhance the environmental and social impact of projects. This position is integral to the ESD's mission of promoting sustainable development and ensuring that the Bank's operations align with its environmental and social commitments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation (TC) initiatives, managing delivery of specific sub-projects or tasks, conducting assessments of Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) compliance, evaluating environmental and social risks and impacts, and contributing to climate and nature risk assessments. The Principal will coordinate project teams, conduct analytical and technical reviews, develop methodologies, and manage data. They will also represent ESD at various internal and external meetings, support capacity-building initiatives, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes. Additionally, the Principal will prepare internal and external reports on the Bank's methodologies and reporting approaches, ensuring alignment with the Bank's behavioral competencies and corporate behaviors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential. Knowledge of international environmental and social standards, such as those set by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is required. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies, as well as strong interpersonal skills, is also necessary. The ability to communicate complex policy issues effectively and to work independently or as part of a team is crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in environmental and social risk assessment, project management, or related disciplines would be advantageous. Continuous professional development in relevant areas is encouraged to stay updated with best practices and emerging trends in environmental and social governance.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in environmental and social risk assessment, project management, and working with multi-disciplinary teams. A history of leading projects or initiatives in complex environments, particularly within international financial institutions or similar organizations, is highly desirable. Experience in mentoring and coaching less experienced staff is also beneficial, as is a demonstrated ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments and build consensus.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with additional languages relevant to the EBRD's countries of operation is advantageous. For positions based in resident offices, local language fluency may be required to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders and clients.
