Job Overview: The intern will be positioned within the Environment (ENV) section of the ICAO Air Transport Bureau (ATB), which is dedicated to addressing the environmental impacts of aviation. The primary functions of this internship include supporting the update of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere, collating and summarizing relevant academic literature, and assisting in coordination efforts with the IPCC regarding global warming impacts. The intern will engage in research and documentation efforts aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from international aviation, contributing to ICAO's mission of promoting sustainable aviation practices. Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's responsibilities will include:
Supporting the update of the IPCC Special Report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere (1999) by researching and compiling relevant data.
Collating and summarizing academic literature related to aviation's environmental impact and ICAO's mitigation measures.
Assisting in the cooperation and coordination with the IPCC on the Special Report concerning the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Performing other related duties as assigned by the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director, Environment, and other senior staff members. This may involve administrative tasks, data analysis, and participation in meetings or workshops.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree program (second-level university degree or higher) in fields related to aviation, environment, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, or computer science. Applicants from educational systems without a clear distinction between undergraduate and graduate studies should have completed at least four years of full-time university studies or equivalent towards a degree. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes a graduate degree program in relevant fields such as aviation, environmental science, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, or computer science. Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of environmental issues related to aviation and possess the ability to engage with complex scientific literature. For those in educational systems that do not separate undergraduate and graduate studies, a minimum of four years of full-time study towards a degree is necessary.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should ideally have some exposure to research methodologies, environmental studies, or aviation-related projects. Interns are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in environmental issues and aviation, along with the ability to synthesize information from various sources. Previous internships or academic projects related to these fields will be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is essential, with strong reading, writing, and speaking abilities required for effective communication. Additionally, a working knowledge of a second language from the Organization's official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is desirable, as it may enhance collaboration and understanding within the international context of ICAO's work.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and all associated costs, including travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses, must be covered by the intern. The internship duration ranges from three to six months, with the intern expected to work up to five days a week. Flexible arrangements may be available for part-time schedules, accommodating up to 24 hours per week for eligible students. Interns are prohibited from engaging in any other form of employment within ICAO during their internship and cannot apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for six months following the end of their internship.
