Job Overview: The Extended Term Consultant (ETC) position at the World Bank involves providing strategic, operational, and logistical support for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as it prepares for its Eighth GEF Assembly and 71st Council meeting scheduled for late May 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The selected consultant will report to the General Manager and Secretary to the Council, acting as a key liaison with the Host Country and coordinating preparations across multiple stakeholders and workstreams. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure the successful delivery of this high-profile event, which gathers representatives from all 186 member countries, including ministers, environmental leaders, civil society, and private sector stakeholders. The consultant will be instrumental in aligning the Host Country's engagement with GEF's objectives and Assembly priorities, ensuring that all logistical and operational aspects are meticulously planned and executed.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Extended Term Consultant include:
Facilitating strategic planning to align Host Country engagement with GEF’s overarching objectives and Assembly priorities.
Assisting in identifying and securing the venue, coordinating interpretation services, staging, and audiovisual/IT requirements.
Coordinating travel, accommodation, local transportation, and catering services for participants and speakers.
Liaising with local authorities to manage security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security arrangements, diplomatic protocol, and high-level participation.
Overseeing registration systems, visa support, and on-site services for participants.
Contributing to the design of the official programme, shaping session formats, managing speaker invitations, and curating content.
Supporting the planning, scheduling, and execution of side events in coordination with partners and organizers.
Assisting with outreach efforts and coordinating with local and international media, managing public information campaigns.
Coordinating field visits and exhibitions. 1
Supporting financial tracking, preparing post-event reports, and documenting lessons learned for future GEF events. 1
Developing a Manual on the Assembly procedures.
Required Qualifications: The position requires an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international affairs, public policy, environmental management, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in coordinating large-scale international events, partnership building, and knowledge management is essential. Familiarity with GEF operations, multilateral processes, or similar institutional environments is strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a multi-stakeholder environment are crucial. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory, and command of the Russian language is considered an asset.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in fields such as international affairs, public policy, environmental management, or a related discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of the complexities involved in international environmental governance and event coordination.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience, specifically in coordinating large-scale international events. Experience in partnership building and knowledge management is also necessary, with a preference for candidates who have experience working in Central Asia. This level of experience is critical to ensure that the consultant can effectively navigate the complexities of international collaboration and event management.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the World Bank Group. Additionally, proficiency in the Russian language is considered an asset, which may enhance communication with stakeholders from Russian-speaking regions and facilitate smoother interactions during the event planning process.
Additional Notes: The position is a one-year appointment, renewable at the discretion of the World Bank Group, with a lifetime maximum Extended Term appointment of three years. If an Extended Term appointment ends before a full year, it is considered as a full year toward the lifetime maximum. The role is open to World Bank and IMF staff only, including short-term and extended-term consultants/temporaries.
