Job Overview: The Assistant Controller position at Human Rights Watch is a critical role within the Finance Division, responsible for supporting the Global Controller in ensuring the highest standards of financial management and compliance. This position involves leading the preparation, review, and reconciliation of financial statements across various regions, ensuring adherence to U.S. GAAP, IFRS, and local accounting standards. The Assistant Controller will also oversee global payroll and intercompany transactions, acting as a key liaison for internal and external audits. Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Controller will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: partnering with the Global Controller to design and implement financial strategies; leading the preparation and reconciliation of financial statements for global operations; overseeing payroll processing and intercompany transactions; coordinating external and internal audits; providing accounting guidance to global teams; preparing board reports and assisting with regulatory filings; monitoring budgets and resource allocation; leading the hiring process for the division; and supervising the US Payroll Manager and Reporting Accountant. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements, as well as the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong foundation in accounting principles and practices, with a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, preferably in a global, mission-driven organization. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing multi-location payroll, general accounting, and bookkeeping. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with nonprofit accounting software such as NetSuite are essential. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are required. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary to engage effectively with staff at all levels and across diverse locations.
Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field is required. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Candidates with advanced degrees or certifications in accounting (such as CPA or CMA) will be viewed favorably, as they demonstrate a higher level of expertise and commitment to the field.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of ten years of relevant work experience, ideally within a large-scale, diverse, and dynamic organization that operates internationally. Experience in nonprofit or NGO accounting operations is highly desirable, as it provides insight into the unique financial challenges and regulatory requirements faced by such organizations. Candidates should have a history of leading teams and managing complex financial processes in a global context.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with strong oral and written communication skills being essential for the role. Additional Notes: This is a full-time remote position, with the requirement for in-office attendance once every six weeks.
