Job Overview:
The Climate Change Expert will play a crucial role in the Sudan Health Assistance Response to Emergencies (SHARE) project, which aims to address immediate health needs in Sudan through the delivery of essential health care and sustaining core public health functions. This position involves working closely with the Project Management Unit (PMU) team to implement climate-related interventions and activities, focusing on enhancing climate resilience and environmental sustainability in health care facilities. The expert will develop action plans, conduct vulnerability assessments, and create contingency plans to mitigate the impacts of climate change on health services. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including implementing partners and external entities, to ensure effective delivery of objectives and outcomes as per WHO commitments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Climate Change Expert will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Delivering on the objectives, required outputs, and outcomes as per WHO commitments and agreements with partners.
  • Developing action plans to enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health care facilities.
  • Rolling out implementation plans and overseeing the execution of climate-related activities.
  • Conducting high-level climate vulnerability assessments of selected hospitals and public health facilities.
  • Reviewing the impact of climate hazards on health facilities and documenting lessons learned regarding risk mitigation and resilience measures.
  • Developing contingency plans for flood, heat, and other climatic hazards, as well as emergency preparedness and response plans for health care facilities.
  • Raising awareness about climate change risks and developing a communication plan for relevant stakeholders.
  • Providing capacity building on climate change and resilience, including conducting trainings and workshops.
  • Performing any other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of climate change impacts on health systems and experience in developing climate resilience strategies. They should have proven skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building. The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and the ability to produce results in challenging environments. Knowledge of health systems in low-resource settings, particularly in relation to climate vulnerabilities, is essential.

Educational Background:
A degree in environmental science, public health, climate change, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in climate resilience, health systems, or emergency response will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in climate change adaptation, health systems strengthening, or emergency response. Experience working in humanitarian settings, particularly in Sudan or similar contexts, is highly desirable. Proven track record of implementing climate-related projects and conducting vulnerability assessments is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Arabic or other local languages is an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is a National UN Volunteer role, which means it is not a salaried position but rather a volunteer opportunity. The selected candidate will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of USD 2,594.34 per month to cover basic living costs. The role requires flexibility and the ability to work in potentially hazardous conditions, emphasizing the need for cultural awareness and commitment to the mission. The position may involve physical hardship and limited comfort, reflecting the unique challenges of working in Sudan.
