Job Overview: The position of Individual Consultant for Biodiversity and Ecosystems is focused on enhancing Malawi's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) specifically from the biodiversity and ecosystems sector. The consultant will be responsible for providing expert advice and support to improve the integration of biodiversity considerations into national climate strategies. This role requires a deep understanding of biodiversity issues, climate change impacts, and the policy landscape in Malawi. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities, to ensure that biodiversity is effectively incorporated into national planning and decision-making processes. The assignment is expected to last for 30 working days, during which the consultant will conduct assessments, facilitate workshops, and develop recommendations for enhancing the NDCs.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Individual Consultant include:
Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current state of biodiversity and ecosystems in Malawi and their contributions to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Engaging with stakeholders to gather input and perspectives on biodiversity issues and NDC enhancement.
Analyzing existing policies and frameworks related to biodiversity and climate change in Malawi.
Developing a set of recommendations for integrating biodiversity considerations into the NDCs.
Facilitating workshops and meetings with stakeholders to discuss findings and gather feedback.
Preparing a final report that outlines the assessment, recommendations, and proposed actions for enhancing the NDCs.
Ensuring that all deliverables are submitted in a timely manner and meet the quality standards set by UNDP.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include:
A strong background in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, or related fields.
Proven experience in policy analysis and development, particularly in the context of climate change and biodiversity.
Familiarity with the UNFCCC process and the role of NDCs in climate action.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders effectively.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess at least a Master's degree in environmental science, ecology, biodiversity conservation, or a related field. A PhD in a relevant discipline would be an advantage, particularly for those with extensive research experience in biodiversity and ecosystems.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in biodiversity conservation, climate change policy, or related areas. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs in Malawi or similar contexts is highly desirable. Previous experience in enhancing NDCs or similar climate-related frameworks will be considered a strong asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and deliverables will be in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi would be an advantage, as it may facilitate better engagement with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is open to both national and international bidders, allowing for a diverse range of applicants. The contract duration is for 30 working days, and the consultant is expected to work flexibly to meet project deadlines.
