Job Overview: The Online Volunteer Mentor position is part of UNFPA’s Youth Empowerment Programme, which seeks to connect experienced professionals with emerging youth leaders for mentorship and capacity building over a 12-week period. The primary goal of this role is to provide guidance and support to young individuals, helping them to develop confidence, acquire relevant skills, and receive career guidance. Mentors will focus on professional development, health awareness, and leadership, particularly for underserved or marginalized youth populations. The mentorship will be conducted in both English and French, ensuring accessibility for a diverse group of participants. Mentors will engage in regular sessions, facilitate discussions, and contribute to a supportive community for mentees, fostering an environment of learning and growth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct regular one-on-one or small group mentorship sessions, either weekly or biweekly, using virtual platforms. Each mentor will be responsible for a group of 3-5 mentees or individual mentees.
Provide guidance on various topics including leadership and personal development, gender equality, reproductive health education, career planning, soft skills, resume writing, LinkedIn optimization, and interview preparation.
Assist mentees in navigating higher education and professional opportunities.
Participate in or lead webinars, discussion circles, or themed talks focused on youth empowerment and related subjects.
Support the growth of a vibrant mentorship community by contributing to online forums, sharing resources, and encouraging peer learning among mentees.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for youth empowerment and development. Mentors should have experience in mentoring, coaching, or teaching, and be able to provide constructive feedback and guidance. A background in education, social work, psychology, or a related field is preferred. Additionally, mentors should be culturally sensitive and able to work with diverse populations, particularly those from underserved or marginalized backgrounds.
Educational Background: A degree in education, social sciences, psychology, or a related field is preferred. Relevant certifications in mentoring, coaching, or youth development may also be beneficial. Candidates should have a strong understanding of youth issues, particularly in the context of sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and personal development.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience in mentoring, coaching, or working with youth in a professional or volunteer capacity. Experience in facilitating discussions, leading workshops, or providing guidance in career development is highly desirable. Familiarity with online platforms for virtual engagement is also important, as the mentorship will be conducted remotely.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory, as the mentorship programme will be conducted bilingually. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly if they relate to the communities being served.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and the commitment is for a 12-week period. Mentors will work remotely, allowing for flexibility in scheduling sessions. The role is designed to be part-time, with the expectation that mentors will dedicate sufficient time to engage with their mentees and contribute to the mentorship community.
