Job Overview: The International Project Manager (PM) will play a pivotal role in managing and implementing the Sustainable Solutions to Solid Waste Management project in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. This position requires a strategic and technical leader who can provide advisory services to UNDP and local government counterparts. The PM will be responsible for enhancing UNDP’s engagement in promoting sustainable environmental practices and public health initiatives, particularly in the context of the Rohingya refugee crisis. The role involves close collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) and local government bodies, to identify opportunities for broader environmental interventions. The PM will oversee project management, implementation, and monitoring, ensuring that the project meets its objectives and contributes to the resilience of both refugee and host communities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The PM will be responsible for leading the formulation of the project’s annual work plans (AWP) and detailed implementation plans, including budgets and procurement strategies. They will establish collaborative partnerships with local stakeholders, oversee project activities, and ensure compliance with UNDP rules and regulations. The PM will also provide technical guidance to project staff and local government officials, monitor project progress, and prepare reports for UNDP and donor review. Additionally, the PM will lead advocacy efforts to promote sustainable waste management practices and develop strategic partnerships to support the project’s goals.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Environmental Science/Management, Social Development, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Engineering, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree) combined with two additional years of qualifying experience will be considered. The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant work experience (nine years with a Bachelor’s degree) in environment or natural resources development, particularly in waste management and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sectors. Experience in project management, working in refugee camp settings, and leading multicultural teams is essential. Strong advocacy, communication, and report writing skills are also required.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree) in relevant fields such as Environmental Science, Social Development, or Natural Resources Management is required. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas, combined with additional qualifying experience, may also be acceptable. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in environmental management principles and practices, as well as an understanding of social development issues related to waste management and public health.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of professional experience in environment or natural resources development, with a focus on waste management and WASH sectors. Candidates should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in contexts involving refugee populations. Experience in leading teams and working in a multicultural environment is crucial, as is familiarity with the South Asia region. The PM should also demonstrate strong advocacy and communication skills, along with a proven track record in report writing and stakeholder engagement.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the local context may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Cox’s Bazar and is expected to involve field missions and consultations with various stakeholders.
