In Bangladesh, IOM focuses on various humanitarian efforts, particularly in response to the Rohingya refugee crisis, providing essential services and support to improve living conditions and promote community well-being.
Job Overview: The WASH Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the IOM WASH Unit's efforts to enhance the living conditions of Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar. This position involves ensuring effective coordination and high-quality monitoring of WASH activities within the camps. The consultant will act as the WASH camp focal point, facilitating collaboration among various WASH agencies and stakeholders to ensure timely and efficient service delivery. The role requires a proactive approach to community engagement, ensuring that the needs of the refugee population are prioritized and addressed through effective WASH interventions. The consultant will also be responsible for regular monitoring and evaluation of WASH services, ensuring compliance with sector standards and IOM policies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: contributing to the achievement of WASH project objectives in collaboration with the WASH NPO and other stakeholders; supporting implementing partners in developing and executing effective work plans; assisting in the creation of action plans for timely implementation of WASH activities; promoting community participation and ownership; conducting regular field visits for monitoring and quality assurance; preparing progress reports using Kobo monitoring tools; participating in needs assessments and coordination meetings; maintaining collaboration with local administration and stakeholders; ensuring technical records are maintained according to guidelines; implementing monitoring and evaluation plans; and performing any other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a University Degree in a WASH-related discipline such as Water, Civil, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Health, Microbiology, or Community Development. Additionally, a minimum of five years of experience in WASH projects, particularly in refugee camps or emergency response settings, is required. Proven experience in supervising WASH activities, construction works, and borehole drilling operations is essential. Strong coordination, negotiation, community mobilization, and facilitation skills are necessary, along with the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a dynamic humanitarian context. Proficiency in computer applications and digital data collection tools, such as Kobo Toolbox, is desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a University Degree in any WASH-related discipline. This could encompass fields such as Water Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Health, Microbiology, or Community Development. The emphasis is on having a solid foundation in the principles and practices relevant to water, sanitation, and hygiene, particularly in contexts involving vulnerable populations such as refugees.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in WASH projects, with a preference for candidates who have worked in refugee camps or emergency response settings. Experience in supervising WASH activities, managing construction works, and conducting borehole drilling operations is crucial.
