The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh was established in 1998 and has been instrumental in supporting the Government of Bangladesh in various aspects of migration management. The organization focuses on humanitarian assistance and aims to facilitate safe, orderly, and regular migration. IOM's largest intervention is in Cox’s Bazar, where it provides support to the Rohingya population in areas such as shelter, site management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health services, and communication efforts. IOM operates in multiple countries and employs a diverse workforce dedicated to addressing migration challenges globally.

Job Overview:
The position of Interpreter within IOM Bangladesh is crucial for ensuring effective communication and knowledge sharing, particularly in the context of supporting the Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing accurate and high-quality interpretation and translation services during interviews, meetings, and discussions. This role requires a commitment to delivering clear and faithful interpretations, as well as high-quality translations of various documents, including reports and communications. The Interpreter will work closely with the Resettlement Movement Management (RMM) unit and will be expected to revise deliverables based on feedback from IOM, ensuring that all translations and interpretations adhere to professional standards. The position also involves providing consecutive interpretation as needed and maintaining a high level of professionalism throughout all assignments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Interpreter will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Providing accurate and faithful interpretation during interviews, meetings, and discussions to facilitate effective communication.
  • Delivering high-quality translations of reports, communications, and knowledge products, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Revising deliverables based on feedback from IOM to enhance the quality of work.
  • Providing consecutive interpretation as required during various engagements.
  • Ensuring that all translations and interpretations utilize standard, accurate, and professional language to maintain the integrity of the communication.
  • Meeting performance indicators such as accuracy and clarity of interpretation and translation, timely delivery of translated documents, responsiveness to feedback, and demonstrating professionalism in all assignments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in any field. Additionally, a minimum of 2 years of practical experience as an Interpreter is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality, clear, and faithful interpretation, as well as the capacity to work effectively under pressure in a multicultural environment. Strong discipline, teamwork, and professionalism are essential attributes for this role.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in any field is the minimum educational requirement for this position. This educational background provides a foundational understanding that is essential for effective communication and interpretation in a complex humanitarian context.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of practical experience as an Interpreter. This experience should include working in environments that demand high levels of accuracy and professionalism in interpretation and translation services. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their ability to handle the pressures of a multicultural work environment and deliver results consistently.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include an excellent command of English, Bengali, and Rohingya languages, both oral and written. Proficiency in these languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. Additionally, knowledge of a third language is considered an added advantage. IOM's official languages are English, French, and Spanish, but the focus for this role is primarily on the aforementioned languages relevant to the local context.

Additional Notes:
The position may require field visits in Cox’s Bazar, Ukhiya, and Teknaf, indicating that travel is a component of the role. Any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation, and the appointment will require certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. IOM provides coverage for Consultants against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) at no cost for the duration of the consultancy. However, IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses, and Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for such cases. It is important to note that IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that contradicts the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including issues related to sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, and discrimination. IOM does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
