Job Overview:
The position of National Individual Consultant is primarily focused on analyzing mitigation and adaptation opportunities across various sectors in Ethiopia. The consultant will be tasked with identifying gaps in current strategies and prioritizing measures and actions that should be included in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.
  • This role is crucial in supporting Ethiopia's climate commitments and ensuring that the country effectively addresses climate change challenges. The consultant will work closely with stakeholders to gather data, assess current policies, and provide recommendations that align with international climate agreements. The position is expected to be home-based, with a total of 50 working days allocated over a period of three months, starting immediately after the contract agreement is concluded.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing mitigation and adaptation strategies in various sectors, including energy, agriculture, and water resources.
  • Identify gaps in the current approaches and assess the effectiveness of existing measures.
  • Prioritize actions and measures that should be included in the NDC 3.0, ensuring alignment with national and international climate goals.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations, to gather insights and data.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations summarizing findings and recommendations.
  • Facilitate workshops and discussions to validate findings and gather feedback from stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all work is completed within the specified timeline and meets the quality standards set by UNDP.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in climate change, environmental science, or a related field. A proven track record of working on climate policy, particularly in the context of developing countries, is essential. The consultant should have excellent analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations. Strong communication skills are required to effectively engage with stakeholders and present findings. Familiarity with UNDP's processes and procedures is an advantage, as is experience working in Ethiopia or similar contexts.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in environmental science, climate change, public policy, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area will be given preference. Additional certifications or training in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies will be considered an asset.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of professional experience in climate change analysis, policy development, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of climate change and sustainable development, is highly desirable. Proven experience in conducting stakeholder consultations and facilitating workshops is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Ethiopia, such as Amharic, is considered an asset and will enhance communication with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a consultancy role with a contract duration of 50 working days over three months. It is a full-time position, and the consultant will work remotely from Addis Ababa. The consultant is expected to start immediately after the contract is signed. Compensation will be based on the consultant's qualifications and experience, in accordance with UNDP's remuneration policies.
