The Secretariat employs thousands of staff members from diverse backgrounds and operates in multiple countries around the world, focusing on international peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed for motivated individuals who are eager to support the Journal Unit of the Central Planning and Coordination Division within the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The Journal Unit plays a crucial role in documenting the activities and discussions that take place at the United Nations Headquarters. Interns will engage in various tasks that contribute to the publication of the Journal of the United Nations, which serves as a historical record of the organization's daily operations. The internship is structured to provide interns with hands-on experience in a professional environment, allowing them to develop skills relevant to their academic and career goals. Interns will work full-time, dedicating 40 hours per week to their responsibilities, which may vary based on the projects assigned and the intern's background.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a range of activities that support the Journal Unit's operations. Key responsibilities include: assisting in the publication process of the Journal of the United Nations; maintaining and updating databases and planning dashboards; compiling, reviewing, and analyzing data for meeting publications; providing technical assistance with the Journal Content Management System (JCMS); responding to queries from submitters and secretariats regarding the Journal; offering administrative support to the Unit; and performing any other related duties as assigned. The internship provides an opportunity to gain insight into the workings of the UN and to contribute to its mission.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Teams, which are essential for the tasks involved in this internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master's or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. This educational background ensures that interns possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills relevant to the tasks they will undertake during the internship.

Experience:
No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This allows interns to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain valuable insights into the operations of the United Nations.

Languages:
Fluency in both spoken and written English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, enhancing the intern's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and is expected to last for a duration of six months. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Those who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to secure the appropriate visa and work authorization prior to starting the internship. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements with the UN before accepting the internship offer. Additionally, the United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, ensuring that all applicants can apply without financial barriers.
