Duties and Responsibilities: As a Firefighter at CERN, your responsibilities will include:
Emergency response: Carrying out firefighting, medical emergency response, and rescue operations.
Safety Control Room operations: Monitoring and managing emergency dispatch activities.
Technical inspections & patrols: Conducting safety checks and ensuring compliance with fire regulations.
Specialized assistance: Providing support in confined space operations, hazardous material handling, and transport missions involving special risks.
Training & exercises: Participating in regular drills and continuous professional development in line with the Fire and Rescue Service’s training plan.
Fire prevention & awareness: Engaging in fire safety initiatives, training sessions, and collaborative safety projects.
Equipment maintenance: Ensuring the upkeep of firefighting and medical emergency equipment, including fire extinguishers and hydrants.
Project participation: Contributing to ongoing projects within the Fire and Rescue Service.
Administrative & operational support: Assisting with necessary administrative duties and team-wide responsibilities. 1
Physical training: Participating in both individual and group fitness programs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess diplomas and/or certificates that validate their education and training as a firefighter, issued by a recognized public or private body. Additionally, candidates should have demonstrated experience as a professional firefighter in a public or company fire service. Experience in control room or ambulance settings is considered an advantage. Technical competencies required include emergency first response, hazardous materials response operations, teaching and training capabilities, and conducting fire safety inspections. Behavioral competencies such as flexibility, teamwork, relationship building, accountability, and self-management are also essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes formal training as a firefighter, which must be evidenced by diplomas and certificates from accredited institutions. This training should encompass both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective firefighting and emergency response.
Experience: Candidates should have a proven track record of working as a professional firefighter, demonstrating relevant experience in emergency response, firefighting operations, and safety inspections. Experience in control room operations or ambulance services is advantageous, as it indicates familiarity with emergency management protocols and procedures.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learning the other language. The ability to understand and communicate in both languages during everyday and emergency situations is a significant advantage. CERN provides language courses to help employees quickly master both French and English, enhancing their communication skills within the diverse work environment.
Additional Notes: The position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role requires a valid C driving license. Candidates must be prepared for regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays, and may be required to work in radiation areas. Additionally, the selected candidate must reside in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations and obtain medical clearance due to the occupational health risks associated with the position.
