Job Overview: The Telecommunications Technician will play a crucial role in the installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of various telecommunications systems and equipment. This position requires a strong understanding of broadcast technology, audio-visual systems, and network operations. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that all systems operate smoothly and meet the required availability and reliability targets. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including technical support staff and service providers, to restore services during facility failures and to optimize operational workflows. The technician will also be expected to prepare detailed reports on system performance and service outages, contributing to the overall efficiency of the UN's communication infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Telecommunications Technician will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: installing, configuring, testing, and commissioning broadcast and associated equipment; operating and maintaining RF, IF, and base-band equipment; conducting periodic system testing and circuit line-up; providing assistance in workflow analyses; ensuring preventative maintenance and repairs are carried out; advising the Unit/Section Chief on operational matters; coordinating provisioning of digital carriers; supervising skilled Engineering Technicians; preparing monthly performance reports; and performing fault diagnosis and repairs. The technician will also be involved in Wide Area Network (WAN) operations, Local Area Network (LAN) operations, and communication technology services, ensuring that all systems are maintained according to established guidelines and performance standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a comprehensive knowledge of telecommunications, audio-visual, and conferencing equipment, as well as principles of operation for local area networks, video networks, and radio systems. The ability to apply technical skills to install and test relevant equipment, provide maintenance services, and user support is essential. The technician should demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and effective communication skills, with a commitment to gender equality and diversity in the workplace. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
Educational Background: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Additional certifications or training in telecommunications, audio-visual technology, or related fields would be advantageous and may enhance a candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of experience in working with conference management and simultaneous interpretation (CMSI), audio-visual, television production, and other broadcast equipment is required. Candidates should have experience in telecommunications or a related area, with progressively responsible experience in the implementation, operation, and maintenance of large television, video production, or conferencing facilities. Familiarity with ST2110 transport and related configurations is desirable, as is experience in project management.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's competitiveness for the role.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work for the United Nations in the duty station where the position is located. The appointment is for an initial period of one year, and applicants selected from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses.
