Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Technician position at CERN is a critical role within the Experimental Physics Department, specifically in the CMS Experiment Systems Group. The successful candidate will be involved in the operation and maintenance of complex mechanical assemblies, particularly the CMS detector, which is a significant component of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This role requires a blend of technical skills in heavy mechanics and logistics, as well as a commitment to innovative system development. The technician will work closely with a team of engineers and physicists, contributing to the maintenance and upgrade of the CMS detector, which involves significant mechanical operations and the use of specialized tools and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Mechanical Technician, your responsibilities will include: actively participating in the assembly and disassembly of the CMS detector, which involves the use of heavy lifting equipment such as screw jacks, hydraulic jacks, and pneumatic locking systems; maintaining and improving heavy lifting and hydraulic tools; supervising and organizing on-site activities for collaboration technicians and external suppliers; supporting the operation and maintenance of the mechanical workshop at the CMS site; interpreting 2D and 3D designs to construct tooling and manufacture mechanical components; ensuring safety and validation of procedures in the workshop; and managing work scheduling and technical team supervision.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in Hydraulics, Mechanics, Electro-Mechanics, or a related field. Additional training or certifications such as high-pressure training, welding certification, and scaffolding certification are considered advantageous. The role demands demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining heavy lifting hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems, as well as initial experience in running a mechanical workshop and supervising technical teams.

Educational Background:
A higher technical diploma or equivalent in a relevant field such as Hydraulics, Mechanics, or Electro-Mechanics is required. Candidates with additional certifications in specialized areas such as welding or high-pressure systems will be preferred, as these qualifications enhance the candidate's ability to perform the job effectively.

Experience:
The position requires demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining heavy lifting hydraulic and mechanical systems, as well as performing mechanical site work. Initial experience in managing a mechanical workshop, including the use of tools and machines, maintenance of equipment, and safety procedures, is essential. Candidates should also have experience in supervising technical teams to ensure effective collaboration and project execution.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is crucial for effective communication within the diverse workforce at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and requires a valid driving license. The position may also involve shift work, stand-by duty, and work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Due to the occupational health risks associated with this role, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is 3-4, and the job reference is EP-CMX-SCI-2025-115-LDB.
