Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed to enhance the visibility and awareness of WHO Collaborating Centres (CCs) and their contributions to global health. The volunteer will engage in developing and writing compelling stories that highlight the work of WHO CCs, particularly aimed at informing external audiences, especially Member States. The role involves creating feature stories around thematic days, publication releases, and corporate events, as well as developing news stories for both intranet and internet platforms. The volunteer will also explore innovative strategies to increase the external visibility of WHO CCs, particularly during governing body meetings, and will be responsible for disseminating knowledge about WHO CC work through social media channels. This position is crucial for promoting the impact of WHO CCs and ensuring that their expertise is recognized and utilized effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and write feature stories profiling WHO Collaborating Centres for publication on the internet, particularly around significant thematic days and corporate events.
  • Create news stories announcing new designations and re-designations of WHO CCs for both intranet and internet platforms.
  • Identify and implement innovative strategies to enhance the visibility of WHO CCs during external events, including governing body meetings.
  • Disseminate knowledge about WHO CC work through social media, including the creation of relevant hashtags and content during technical meetings.
  • Propose updates and refreshing of the WHO CC intranet and internet pages to ensure they are current and engaging.
  • Collaborate with WHO staff and other stakeholders to gather information and insights necessary for story development.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of published stories and social media posts to inform future communications strategies.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to convey complex health information in an engaging and accessible manner.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and strategies for increasing visibility and engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a virtual environment.
  • Strong research skills to gather information from various sources.
  • Understanding of public health issues and the role of WHO and its Collaborating Centres.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools for content creation and dissemination.

Educational Background:
A background in communications, public health, journalism, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a strong understanding of health communication principles and practices, as well as experience in writing for diverse audiences.

Experience:
Previous experience in writing, communications, or public health is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of producing high-quality written content, preferably in a health-related context. Experience with social media management and digital communication strategies will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly those spoken in WHO Member States, is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's ability to reach a broader audience.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and the duration of the engagement is flexible. The role can be performed remotely, allowing for international participation. The position is part-time, and the volunteer will work closely with WHO staff to align on objectives and deliverables. While this role is unpaid, it offers valuable experience in global health communications and the opportunity to contribute to the important work of WHO.
