Job Overview: The CCAC National ProjectCoordinator will play a crucial role in supporting South Africa's national planning and implementation efforts related to short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). This position involves conducting integrated SLCP assessments and rapidly implementing actions that aim to reduce SLCP emissions at the national level. The Coordinator will work closely with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to enhance institutional and technical capacities, ensuring that key mitigation measures are effectively supported. The role also includes fostering political and institutional backing for the SLCP mitigation strategy and the National Clean Air Action Plan roadmap. The Coordinator will be responsible for building strong government buy-in and facilitating inter-ministerial collaboration to integrate SLCP priorities into broader national development and climate strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Project Coordinator will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: 1) Establishing mechanisms for inter-ministerial and inter-institutional coordination on SLCP reduction, such as creating an inter-institutional task force or national SLCP unit. 2) Providing technical support for monitoring emission reductions from mitigation actions outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). 3) Assisting in the reporting and measurement of SLCP emissions within the UNFCCC reporting framework. 4) Engaging with sub-national governments and civil society to promote SLCP mitigation efforts. 5) Building national capacity for SLCP mitigation through training sessions for relevant ministries and institutions. 6) Developing integrated SLCP, GHG, and air pollutant emission inventories and mitigation assessments. 7) Drafting and finalizing papers that recommend concrete actions for SLCP mitigation. 8) Submitting proposals for national and international funding to support the implementation of the National SLCP Strategy. 9) Creating awareness-raising materials and organizing events focused on integrated climate change and air pollution reduction. 10) Actively participating in CCAC events and meetings to showcase successes and address challenges.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in environmental science, environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, physics, climate change, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in fields relevant to climate change, air pollution, sustainable development, or the environment is required. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to provide technical assistance to governments and stakeholders, as well as effective communication skills, both written and oral. Knowledge of South Africa's national policies regarding climate change mitigation and air pollution is essential, along with familiarity with national environmental regulations and key stakeholders.
