Job Overview: The position of Process Engineer within the Plant & Process Engineering Division (PPED) of the Engineering Services Department (ESD) at the ITER Organization offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a groundbreaking fusion energy project. As a Process Engineer, you will be responsible for utilizing engineering analysis to inform design decisions, ensuring that all work aligns with relevant codes and standards. Your role will involve producing high-quality engineering solutions across a wide range of process engineering topics throughout the lifecycle of the system. You will be expected to ensure that deliverables are produced according to project schedules and budgets, all while maintaining a quality-assured environment that requires a rigorous and systematic approach to work. Under the guidance of your discipline manager, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience, contributing to the overall success of the ITER project. The ESD is essential for providing the skilled engineering resources necessary for the successful completion of the ITER Project, and as a member of the PPED, you will collaborate with colleagues across various ITER units, sharing and developing your expertise in process engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Process Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include developing and finalizing functional analysis, control logic design studies, and operational guidelines for both new and existing plant systems, ensuring compliance with interfacing systems. You will conduct in-depth analysis, calculations, and process reports for various plant systems to verify that designs meet the full lifecycle requirements, including procurement, testing, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. Your duties will also involve performing mass balances, heat balances, process modeling, and simulations using software such as Fathom, Relap, Impulse, Arrow, EcosimPro, and ANSYS. Additionally, you will support procurement activities by preparing technical specifications, relevant tenders, and updating documents as necessary for the fabrication and testing of plant systems. You will also be responsible for supporting commissioning and plant performance testing, including preparing documentation for testing and commissioning while considering client requirements and supplier availability. Furthermore, you will produce Process Flow Diagrams, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, Layout Drawings, Specifications, Equipment Process Data Sheets, Instrument Data Sheets, Interlock Descriptions, and Cause and Effect Diagrams. It is important to note that job descriptions may not be exhaustive, and you may be required to undertake other duties that align with your primary responsibilities. This position may involve shift work and on-call duties, which are crucial for maintaining continuous operations and ensuring the highest level of service for stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the Process Engineer position, candidates must possess proven experience in managing engineering design, integration, and installation of liquid and gas process and instrumentation lines, particularly in nuclear or hazardous environments. Essential qualifications include expertise in process engineering, specifically in process plant design, flow calculations, and pipe stress analysis. Candidates should have experience in specifying, designing, testing, installing, and maintaining liquid and gas systems to meet system performance, nuclear safety, and investment protection requirements. Additionally, candidates should have a solid understanding of system architecture, mechanical design, I&C logic, and technical specifications for system components. Experience in system design development, including high category nuclear safety systems, design engineering, and analysis, is also essential. Familiarity with manufacturing, welding, testing, qualification, and commissioning processes is required, along with a commitment to continuous improvement and quality management systems (QMS). Desirable qualifications include knowledge of process simulation software and organizational savvy to navigate complex policy and process dynamics effectively.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Process or Chemical Engineering or a relevant discipline. In cases where candidates do not possess the required educational qualifications, extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities or additional training certificates in relevant domains may be considered as a substitute for formal education. This flexibility allows for a broader range of applicants to be considered for the position, ensuring that the best candidates are selected based on their skills and experience rather than solely on formal educational credentials.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a proven track record of experience in managing engineering design and integration, particularly in the context of nuclear or hazardous environments. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to handle complex engineering tasks related to process engineering, including the design and installation of liquid and gas systems. Experience in process plant design, flow calculations, and pipe stress analysis is essential, as is familiarity with the full lifecycle of plant systems, from procurement to decommissioning. Candidates should also have experience in continuous improvement initiatives and quality management systems, showcasing their ability to enhance efficiency and productivity over time. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engineering design and analysis, with a focus on nuclear safety and compliance with relevant regulations.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. This proficiency is essential for effective communication within the diverse and multi-cultural environment of the ITER Organization. While not mandatory, knowledge of the French language is advantageous, particularly for supporting responses to regulatory queries and enhancing communication with local stakeholders. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial in fostering collaboration within the international team at ITER.
Additional Notes: The initial employment contract for this position is up to five years, with the possibility for extension based on project needs and individual performance. The job grade for this position is P1/P2, indicating a professional level of responsibility and expertise. The role may involve shift work and on-call duties, requiring flexibility in working hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, depending on project requirements. Candidates should possess a valid driving license in France, as commuting may be necessary for certain duties, although no commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization. The ITER Organization is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, ensuring that all employees are treated with respect and dignity, and that their contributions are valued in achieving the project's objectives.
