Job Overview:
The intern will support the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) portfolio, focusing on strengthening women's movements and coalition building in East and Southern Africa. This role involves working closely with the EVAW Policy Specialist and the ACT Regional Coordinator to coordinate and document efforts under the ACT Programme, which aims to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls through advocacy, movement strengthening, and collaborative partnerships. The intern will engage in various activities, including organizing campaigns, preparing advocacy materials, and mapping practices for protecting women human rights defenders. The position offers an opportunity to enhance knowledge on gender equality and evidence-based programming approaches for EVAWG prevention and response, while also developing skills in advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support EVAWG partners in coordinating and documenting their efforts under the ACT Programme, including regional engagements and virtual meetings.
  • Assist in organizing and documenting the 16 Days Campaign in alignment with ESAR ACT advocacy priorities, fostering collaborative relationships with regional partners.
  • Prepare advocacy messages and briefs related to the ACT programme and the UNiTE initiative, including coordinating meetings and drafting communication materials.
  • Conduct mapping and exchange of approaches on strengthening women's movements and coalitions, in collaboration with regional bodies such as AUC, SADC, and IGAD.
  • Map promising practices for protecting diverse women human rights defenders from violence and threats.
  • Support the ACT Civil Society Regional Network and partners in organizing and documenting meetings, workshops, and learning sessions, including logistics for participants.
  • Enhance knowledge on gender equality and EVAWG programming, data analysis for advocacy, and effective communication strategies.

Required Qualifications:
  • University studies in gender studies, gender and development, international relations, social work, or a related field are required.
  • Enrollment in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) is necessary.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of ending violence against women and experience in advocacy for gender equality in Africa, preferably in East and Southern Africa, are essential.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required, with a working knowledge of another UN language being an advantage.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed university studies in relevant disciplines such as gender studies, gender and development, international relations, or social work. Additionally, they should be enrolled in a graduate school programme, which indicates a commitment to further education and specialization in the field of gender equality and women's empowerment.

Experience:
The position requires demonstrable experience working on advocacy for gender equality, particularly in the context of East and Southern Africa. This experience may include involvement in projects or initiatives aimed at addressing violence against women and girls, as well as familiarity with the regional dynamics and challenges related to gender issues.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the organization's multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
Interns who do not receive financial support from other sources will receive a stipend from UN Women to help cover basic living costs during the internship.
