Job Overview: The Technical Writer position is part of the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) retainer pool and is designed for home-based work. This role is not full-time; retainers are engaged on an intermittent basis, meaning there are no guaranteed minimum working hours or days. The Technical Writer will work under the supervision of the Senior Programme Manager and collaborate closely with the ETP Senior Communications Officer and the programme team. The primary responsibilities include developing a workplan upon contract signing, which can be updated periodically to meet ETP’s needs. The Technical Writer will create various written materials, ensuring they align with ETP’s Results-Based Monitoring Framework (RBMF) and effectively communicate the programme's results and impact to targeted audiences, including funders and stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Technical Writer will be responsible for developing a suite of written materials such as annual and semi-annual reports, knowledge and outreach products, business development proposals, and case studies. Key duties include reviewing ETP programme/project documents to understand the areas of work, gathering and synthesizing data, drafting content in coordination with ETP staff, ensuring accuracy and consistency in messaging, participating in programme team meetings for insights, proofreading external content, and performing additional writing, editing, or proofreading tasks as needed. The role requires a focus on articulating ETP’s programme results and impact clearly and comprehensively for non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in fields such as English Language, Journalism, Communications, Environmental Studies, or related areas. Alternatively, a first university degree (Bachelor’s) with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered. A minimum of two years of relevant experience in technical writing and editing is required, along with a desirable understanding of climate change or energy transition topics. Experience with UN or EU editorial style guides and strong research and analytical skills are also highly desirable. Proficiency in Google-suite applications is beneficial.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or similar) in English Language, English Literature, Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, Environmental Studies, or a related field is required. A first university degree (Bachelor’s) in the aforementioned fields, combined with two years of relevant experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in technical writing and editing or a similar role. Candidates should have a solid understanding of climate change or energy transition topics, which is desirable. Experience working with the UN and/or EU editorial style guide is also preferred, along with strong research and analytical skills.
Languages: Fluency in written and oral English is mandatory. Knowledge of another official UNOPS language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile for the position.
Additional Notes: The contract type is an International Individual Contract Agreement (IICA) at level ICS 9/LICA 9/IICA -1, with a duration of one year (up to 200 working days) and the possibility of extension. This is not a full-time position; retainers may be requested to carry out tasks on an intermittent basis, with no guaranteed minimum hours or days. Candidates must have the necessary permissions to work in their home base location without sponsorship from UNOPS. Additionally, selected candidates must complete mandatory courses before providing services to UNOPS, which will not be compensated.
