Job Overview: This internship is situated within the Enterprise Solutions Service of the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT/ESS) at UNESCAP in Bangkok, Thailand. The primary focus of this internship is to assist in the development of a full-stack system that will facilitate the reception and visualization of fuel transactions from Android-based scanners currently utilized in peacekeeping missions. Interns will engage in a data-driven project that is operationally significant, providing them with hands-on experience in full-stack software development. The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days a week, totaling 35 hours. Interns will work under the guidance of a staff member in OICT/ESS, contributing to various aspects of the project including backend development, database design, front-end implementation, documentation, and collaboration with stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
Assisting in the development of a backend API using Spring Boot to securely receive and process fuel transaction data.
Contributing to the design of a SQL database schema that is optimized for operational use and reporting.
Implementing a web-based front-end using React to allow authorized users to consult and explore fuel transaction records.
Writing documentation and participating in Agile development cycles, including sprints, code reviews, and testing.
Collaborating with stakeholders from peacekeeping missions and other teams within OICT. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in a mission-critical environment, enhancing the intern's skills in software development and teamwork.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). No prior work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, React, SQL databases, and RESTful APIs is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and possess a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, candidates should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related discipline. The educational background should provide a foundation that supports the intern's ability to contribute effectively to the tasks outlined in the internship description.
Experience: No prior work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates should have relevant training, education, or coursework that would benefit the United Nations during their internship. A demonstrated interest in full-stack development and real-time data systems is considered an asset, as it aligns with the responsibilities of the internship.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
