Established in 1947, UNESCAP aims to promote economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region. The organization operates in multiple countries across Asia and the Pacific, focusing on various issues such as sustainable development, social inclusion, and regional cooperation. UNESCAP employs a diverse workforce and collaborates with various stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and the private sector, to achieve its mission.

Job Overview:
This internship is part of the Enterprise Solutions Service within the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT/ESS) at UNESCAP. The intern will engage in a full-time, unpaid role for a duration of five months, working five days a week for a total of 35 hours. The primary focus of this internship is to contribute to the development of a full-stack system that will facilitate the reception and visualization of fuel transactions from Android-based scanners used in peacekeeping missions. This project is data-driven and operational, providing interns with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in full-stack software development within a mission-critical environment. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member and will be involved in various aspects of the software development lifecycle, including backend API development, database design, front-end implementation, documentation, and Agile development processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Assisting in the development of a backend API using Spring Boot to securely receive and process fuel transaction data.
  • Contributing to the design of a SQL database schema that is optimized for operational use and reporting purposes.
  • Implementing a web-based front-end using React, allowing authorized users to consult and explore fuel transaction records.
  • Writing documentation to support the development process and ensure clarity for future users and developers.
  • Participating in Agile development cycles, including sprints, code reviews, and testing activities.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders from peacekeeping missions and other teams within OICT to ensure the system meets operational needs. This role requires effective communication, teamwork, planning, and technological awareness to successfully contribute to the project.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). No prior working experience is required to apply for this internship, but familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, React, SQL databases, and RESTful APIs is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and possess a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, candidates should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a relevant field such as computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related discipline. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in programming, software development methodologies, and database management, which are essential for the tasks involved in this internship.

Experience:
While no formal work experience is required, candidates should have a demonstrated interest in full-stack development and real-time data systems. Any relevant coursework, projects, or internships that showcase skills in software development, particularly in Java, Spring Boot, React, and SQL, will be advantageous. The ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and adapt to a fast-paced development environment is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. The internship may be conducted remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions, and applicants should be prepared for this possibility. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, and applicants should be cautious of any requests for personal financial information.
