The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh was officially established in 1998 and has been actively working with the Government of Bangladesh and various stakeholders to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration. IOM Bangladesh is involved in a wide range of activities including migration governance, skills development, and humanitarian assistance. The organization plays a significant role in large-scale operations in Cox’s Bazar to support the Rohingya population and is also engaged in refugee resettlement and protection processes. IOM operates in multiple countries and has a mission to provide comprehensive migration and humanitarian assistance in line with its mandate.

Job Overview:
The position of Interpreter is crucial for facilitating communication during an upcoming interview scheduled at the High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh. The interpreter will be responsible for providing high-quality translation services between Somali and English, ensuring that the applicant can effectively communicate with the interview panel. This role is not only about translating words but also about conveying the context and nuances of the conversation, which is essential for the success of the interview process. The interpreter will work closely with IOM staff and must adhere to the organization’s standards and protocols while delivering services. The assignment is set for June 18, 2025, at 2:00 PM local time, and the interpreter will be expected to maintain professionalism and confidentiality throughout the process.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The interpreter will perform a variety of tasks including:
  • Providing high-quality Somali translation services for interviews, reports, communications, and other materials as required by IOM.
  • Revising deliverables based on feedback from IOM to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Ensuring that interpretation is linguistically accurate, culturally appropriate, and free from errors.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive information and demonstrating professional behavior in all interactions.
  • Providing clear, impartial, and contextually accurate interpretation during interviews or meetings.
  • Adhering to IOM’s guidelines, ethics, and communication protocols while delivering translation or interpretation services.
  • Checking appropriate sources of reference and keeping abreast of developments in both the source and target languages.
  • Translating documents as required and providing consecutive interpretation during discussions and audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of practical work experience as an interpreter.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality, clear, and faithful interpretation during interviews and meetings using standard and accurate language.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a multicultural environment.
  • A team player with a high sense of discipline and professionalism.
  • Excellent command of both Somali and English; proficiency in a third language is an added advantage.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor’s degree in any field. This educational background is essential as it provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication and interpretation in a professional setting.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of practical work experience as an interpreter. This experience is crucial as it ensures that the candidate is familiar with the nuances of interpretation and can handle the demands of real-time translation during interviews and meetings. Candidates should have a proven track record of providing interpretation services in similar contexts, demonstrating their capability to manage the responsibilities of this role effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in Somali and English is mandatory for this position. The proficiency in these languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the context of migration and humanitarian assistance, would be considered an advantage, enhancing the interpreter's ability to communicate effectively in diverse situations.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is subject to funding confirmation, and the appointment will require certification of the candidate's medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned government, where applicable. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) for the duration of the consultancy. However, IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses, and consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including issues related to sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, and discrimination. IOM does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
