Job Overview: The ESS Advisor position is a part-time, permanent role within the Climate Change Division of Save the Children Australia. The role is designed to create lasting change for children by providing leadership on Environmental and Social Safeguarding (ESS) matters specifically for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) portfolio. The advisor will be responsible for driving good practices in ESS across the organization, ensuring compliance with policies and guidelines, and providing technical support for project-level Environmental and Social Management Frameworks (ESMFs). Duties and Responsibilities: The ESS Advisor will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Providing leadership on all aspects of ESS for the GCF portfolio.
Driving the replication of good practices across the wider movement’s portfolio, utilizing the global ESS tool.
Overseeing compliance with organizational policies, guidelines, and donor requirements regarding environmental and social safeguarding.
Providing technical support for the implementation of project-level ESMFs.
Leading the development of necessary technical guidelines for project staff.
Monitoring all required environmental and social mitigation measures set out in GCF project-level ESMFs.
Collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of ESS practices and policies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a deep expertise in developing and implementing Environmental and Social Management Frameworks and other safeguarding instruments. The role requires at least 5 years of experience in environmental and social impact assessment and risk management. Proficiency in English, both verbal and written, is mandatory. Additionally, ESS and ESMF training and certification are required, along with international aid and development experience.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for the ESS Advisor position include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Environmental Engineering, International Public Health, or Development. Furthermore, candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in related fields such as Environmental Management, Social Impact Assessment, or Sustainable Development. Certifications such as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) or equivalent are highly preferred, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in environmental and social impact assessment and risk management. This experience should ideally be within the context of international aid and development, demonstrating the candidate's ability to navigate complex environmental and social issues effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, both in verbal and written communication. While English is the primary language required, additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly in regions where Save the Children operates, enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders.
