Job Overview:
The Climate Change and Disaster Resilience Curriculum Specialist will play a pivotal role in the Solomon Islands Senior Secondary Education Improvement Project, which is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This position is crucial for integrating climate change and disaster risk reduction into the senior secondary curriculum, which serves students in Years 10-1
  • The specialist will assess existing capacity gaps within the educational framework and develop actionable strategies to prepare students for adaptive livelihoods in sectors vulnerable to climate change. The role involves collaborating with subject matter experts to ensure that climate themes are effectively incorporated into teaching materials, assessments, and pedagogical approaches. The specialist will also focus on aligning climate concepts with national development strategies, thereby ensuring that the curriculum is not only relevant but also practical and applicable to real-world scenarios. This position requires significant travel to Honiara, where the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) is based, to facilitate collaboration and training efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the skills and capacity gaps in the current curriculum related to climate change and disaster resilience, identifying specific priorities and actions needed to address these gaps.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to enhance their capacity in developing curriculum materials that promote climate and disaster resilience.
  • Review and provide input on all new curriculum resources to ensure that climate change education is seamlessly integrated into the content and pedagogy.
  • Actively work with subject matter experts to develop content for the 'Living Sustainably' subject, ensuring that climate-resilient agricultural practices are included.
  • Develop and implement pilot initiatives such as the Climate Youth Ambassadors Scheme to promote climate awareness among students.
  • Mentor and train curriculum writers and MEHRD staff to build national capacity and ensure the sustainability of educational reforms.
  • Create knowledge products that document lessons learned from pilot initiatives, contributing to a holistic climate-resilient education system.

Required Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in climate change, disaster risk reduction, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 6 years of general experience in climate change, disaster reduction, and environmental sustainability is necessary, with 10 years preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in supporting climate and disaster resilience initiatives within curriculum development projects and related education sector initiatives is essential.
  • Experience working in the Pacific region is preferred, providing a contextual understanding of the challenges faced in this area.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree in a relevant field such as climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental science, or education. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of integrating climate resilience into the educational curriculum.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 6 years of general experience in fields related to climate change and disaster resilience, with a preference for candidates who have 10 or more years of relevant experience. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of direct experience in curriculum development projects that focus on climate adaptation and resilience, particularly within the education sector.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of instruction and communication in the Solomon Islands. Knowledge of local languages or dialects would be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local stakeholders and communities.
